If someone can't fit everything they want to say in one post, they will create a thread by replying to themselves. The numbers indicate which part of the thread that post is.

Not everyone has the ability to change there instance to accept more charactersAs Sam says, there's no official way for admins to change character limits on standard Mastodon. Those that do it have to edit several files and then re-do the edits every time they update the server software.

@FediTips My #Mastodon server uses the official #Docker image, then automatically creates a new image with the post character limit increased to 3,000 and runs that image. Anytime I upgrade, the automation runs and produces the patched image. If it can’t patch, it lets me know so I can adjust the patch file.
Sure would be nice if @MastodonEngineering would just make this configurable.
