    Happy Stanislav Petrov day!

    Today marks 43 years since Petrov decided to wait for confirmation before escalating a missile alert up the chain of command in the Soviet Air Defense, preventing nuclear war.

    A hero for not trusting automated systems fully.

    @kralcttam

    nuclear war was also averted in a different instance:

    Vasily Arkhipov

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Arkhipov#Role_in_the_Cuban_Missile_Crisis

    during the cuban missile crisis an american ship dropped what is called a signaling depth charge to tell a soviet sub to surface (it's designed to make a noise, but doesn't do damage)

    but the submarine officers thought this was an attack

    they thought war had started

    2 of 3 commanding officers required to agree before launch, agreed to launch a nuclear torpedo

    Vasily said no

            @kralcttam It almost happened in 1979 too. I remember reading it in the paper when I was on my break at work.

                  @kralcttam Those real stories influenced films like 'Wargames' (year 1983) during the 80s. Common people were concerned with those questions. Today everyone is just following orders, because "computers never make mistakes" and AI tycoons "are the most smart and hard working people in the planet".

                        They still do love their children. That's why they send them to boarding schools in Western Europe, and let poor minorities die in the war instead

                            @benroyce @kralcttam I didn't know that 😊 BTW I actually kind-of hate the way the movie ends on a "You were both right" note, because Captain Ramsay was not only clearly in the wrong, but also extremely eager to break with protocol in favor of his own position, even as he demands Hunter obey those same rules.

                            The navy choosing to cover for Ramsay's blatant criminal actions towards a POC subordinate is a little too on the nose for an ostensible "happy" ending...
