Thanks to AI eating the supply chain, hosting a website has gotten a LOT more expensive than in years past. One wonders what's going to happen to bajillions of small hosting companies that are profitable as long as all their equipment isn't 2-10 times more expensive than it used to be. For now, they're just passing the costs on to their customers. But my guess is the hosting industry is headed for a wave of consolidation and/or bankruptcies.

@briankrebs Maybe we'll all go back to self-hosting. I miss serving silly websites from a desktop in my bedroom.

@briankrebs ideally it could lead to everyone making their sites more efficient 🤔

@briankrebs everyones gonna go the '$5 cloud vm with next to no resources as a vpn endpoint, then site to site from their house so they can have a static public ip to host shit at home from' route.

or go the way I did - buy equipment and plunk it in a colo, and host stuff for family and friends

@Viss @briankrebs yep! I have a VPS in San Franscisco that I'm tunneling most of my personal server stuff through to my server rack at home using wireguard. Thank you @mttaggart for the inspiration on that one.

@briankrebs It's not just that side of things — I'm willing to bet the increase in the sheer number of requests caused by AI crawlers will lead to challenges in the over-provisioning practices of these very hosting companies, too.

@briankrebs AI has destroyed far more than just tech. Behold:

                  Global Task Tracking Catastrophe

A global task tracking catastrophe occurs when complex work is distributed across so many people, documents, systems, and automated tools that no one maintains a reliable model of the task as a whole.

Each participant tracks only a narrow fragment; design intent, schedule, pricing, procurement, code compliance, inspection, or document production. The organization therefore loses track of:

                  what has actually been decided,
                  what remains provisional,
                  which evidence supports each claim,
                  what changed and why,
                  who owns unresolved decisions,
and which downstream assumptions are now invalid.

Once shared state collapses, organizations begin mistaking professional-looking artifacts for completed work. Approved submittals, stamped drawings, inspection sign-offs, confident code citations, meeting minutes, and AI-generated summaries become substitutes for verified understanding.

The central failure is not human versus machine. It is:

                  verified reasoning versus plausible authority.

Humans already produce confident but incorrect approvals, interpretations, and inspections. AI intensifies the problem by generating polished outputs faster than qualified people can meaningfully verify them. This creates verification debt: the growing gap between how much work appears complete and how much has actually been reconciled with reality.

The typical result is not immediate catastrophe, but persistent systemic failure; rework, incompatible assemblies, cost escalation, schedule compression, latent safety defects, commissioning problems, and endless disputes over responsibility.

                  In its simplest form:

Global task tracking catastrophe is the collapse of shared, verified task state across fragmented organizations, while document production continues to create the appearance of control.

This is going to cause buildings to topple, safety systems to fail, organizational institutions crumbling, and far more that I can't even yet comprehend.

@briankrebs isn't that implicitly part of the plan of the big cloudies anyway?
I guess at least they would not mind if small business owners now also need consulting to host their websites in those S3 buckets.

@briankrebs AVOID AVOID AVOID any of the companies owned by Newfold Digital, formerly Endurance International Hosters. There are quite a few and you've heard of some of them. You can do better.

@Viss @briankrebs I don't (currently) run a mail server on my home IP, but I do run it at work and for a few clients (all on the same ISP, IPs assigned from the same pool). No problems at all.

                                    Some of it greed!

Why has the annual cost of a domain name almost doubled? A ripoff in the first place.

Or a static IP on an always on Broadband connection that uses no carrier proxies costs a fortune.

@briankrebs everyones gonna go the '$5 cloud vm with next to no resources as a vpn endpoint, then site to site from their house so they can have a static public ip to host shit at home from' route.

or go the way I did - buy equipment and plunk it in a colo, and host stuff for family and friends

@Viss @briankrebs I was gonna say, this might mean the return of friend-colos.

@briankrebs It's not just that side of things — I'm willing to bet the increase in the sheer number of requests caused by AI crawlers will lead to challenges in the over-provisioning practices of these very hosting companies, too.

@neverpanic @briankrebs They'll just start hammering the stuff hosted at home to scrape. My fiber modem's logs are full of scrapers looking for open ports 443 and 80 (correlated against the netblocks I already block at my site).

                                          @briankrebs

Correction: hosting a *dynamically generated* website *without* a cache-friendly architecture will be a LOT more expensive.

If you are hosting a static site or you have a proper cache setup you'll see more hits/bandwidth but not much for CPU/memory/disk usage.

We just go back to the same optimizations from the days of PHP-heavy websites making database queries for every page load: fix your stupid site, stop wasting CPU and database queries for every page load. Cache it. Aggressively. Do it right. It's not even hard, people are just extremely lazy.
