    Today Igalia turns 25.

In September 2001, ten engineers from the University of A Coruña started a company with no outside investors, no managers, and no intention of ever appointing any.

There are now close to 200 of us, spread across the world. The arrangement has not changed: no managers, no shareholders, and everything we build left where anyone can use it.

Here is to the next twenty-five.

In 2002 we became part of the GNOME ecosystem and built Fisterra, an open source ERP. In 2005 we worked on Maemo. By 2008 browsers had become our centre of gravity, and we helped carry Epiphany off Gecko and onto WebKit.

We implemented CSS Grid in both Blink and WebKit, and it shipped in Chrome and Safari in 2017. Two years later one of us became a co-editor of the spec.

Implement it, then help write the standard for it. That sequence describes a lot of what we do.

Five days ago we shipped WebKitGTK and WPE WebKit 2.54, with a new compositor built on Skia and the Temporal API we helped specify at TC39.

On a Raspberry Pi 4 it lifts MotionMark by around 36%.

Twenty-five years ago ten people set out to find whether a company owned by its workers could do serious engineering entirely in the open. We think the answer is in the commit logs.

All of it is upstream, where anyone can use it. Here is to the next twenty-five.

Last year: 362 commits to the Linux kernel, top contributor to WebKit after Apple, just under a fifth of everything Chromium takes from outside Google, and about four fifths of Orca, the screen reader the Linux desktop depends on.

None of it is charity. Customers pay for features they need, and we do the work upstream rather than in a fork they carry forever. It arrives in the next release and keeps working after the contract ends. Everyone else gets the same code.
