      @hpod16 Welcome to the Fediverse!

      That's a very good question. I'm glad many people are responding with good ideas.

      @outer they sure are!
      I can't believe how welcoming it's been to arrive here on MD. 💜
      And I've been getting a lot of good inspiration and education. I'm actually buzzing to go back to work on Monday - imagine!

        @ptvirgo not a rude mistake at all!
        Just making sure I don't overstep or look like I'm promising anything here 🙂
        I'm very much here in my *personal* capacity, so I can't talk about anything we may or may not be planning.
        I'm here for learning and inspiration 💜
        And also to play around and create content.
        I'm having a great time so far, and kind of being reminded of why I fell in love with social media in the first place.

          @ptvirgo that is indeed a topic for a fresh thread.
          And perhaps a fresh day. It's 11PM over here, time to get off the screen, switch over to one of my favourite #DnD Podcasts and drift off to sleep.
          But thanks for asking! 💜

            Here's my first Mastodon post!
            My mission out here? To understand and promote Mastodon, the only large European social media platform (to my knowledge).
            How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?

              @hpod16 welcome to Mastodon!

              I hope you'll enjoy being here.

              As for your mission, It's my belief that explaining exactly what ActivityPub (and not just Mastodon) actually would be a great first step. ActivityPub is the protocol that every Fediverse service uses to dialogue with other services.

              I also believe that @_elena and her (I hope this is the right pronoun Elena, if not just make me know and I'll edit) videos explaining the Fediverse would help a lot

              @alex @hpod16 welcome to Mastodon / the fediverse Hannah! It's great to have you here. And thank you for the mention Alex (totally right pronouns, but a reminder I should put them in my bio).

              Hannah I made a short video about the Fediverse (the galaxy of social networks that Mastodon is part of) last year and people seemed to really like it: https://blog.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/

              I also wrote a Fediverse started guide: https://blog.elenarossini.com/my-fediverse-starter-guide/

              I look forward to interacting with you on here. Have a great day!

                @gagagoogle you can't track a location, if there isn't any. You can't track engagement on other websites, if you don't have neither the cookies, nor the IPs. Just two examples.

                I'm pretty sure, is aware of potential abuse. Yet, ofc, everything that is publically visible, is trackable. You might choose not to go for your real name and not posting any photos of yourself, your friends, neighborhoods or home, for example.

                @BrennpunktUA @hpod16 @Mastodon That's true what you state about the tracking. And hence not as many datapoints being tracked, the selling part is definitely less valuable. And one could hope that the Monitoring is an ofc for most ppl. I think it is for most already on masto, but not so much for others to come.

                  @hpod16 @gagagoogle yes, sounds like a good idea.

                  There's some basic spam and DDOS protection already, afaik. I already got time-limited for posting too much, once or twice 😅 Also, some DMs and follow requests got automatically marked as "potential spam".

                    @gagagoogle @hpod16 @Mastodon

                    "by adding a "report abuse"-button to each post. Any user could then flag any post"

                    There already is? Screenshot 3 shows how you can report additional posts (the original one is already marked) of the same "abuse category" of the same user in just one step. If the user is on a different server, you can choose to report to your server only, or to both.

                    But yeah, trusted flaggers like @hateaid are very helpful, too.

                    @BrennpunktUA @hpod16 @Mastodon @hateaid Your'e right! Totally missed that one (and it was hiding in plain sight). Will explore it further as I find a post a little more unsettling than the "I don't like it"-option 😎

                    That only leaves the "trusted flaggers" and "untrusted flaggers" option that is a feature for the server owners, and maybe the appointed server moderators (but I don't know if thats a thing here).

                      @hpod16 Hi Hannah, welcome to the Fedi! Nice to see there's some actual interest in federated platforms from someone working for the EU.
                      (Nice to see quite some new folks here in the last days, actually.)
                      I'll be glad to share any tips you may need about it!

                        I think your'e right. But I'll try to dig a bit deeper here, below the "Mastodon is friendlier"-posts that broadcasts from time to time.

                        Since it's easy to build your house with straw (and cheaper), the huffing and puffing wolf is just a tale. Right now it's so cosy and friendly here in our little hut.

                          @hpod16 I think a program that would provide funding to support some types of organizations setting up their own fedi instances could be a good idea for getting more of them on board. That could get all sorts of local information streams people naturally want to subscribe to over here.

                          Also, looking at for example the Forkiverse you see how effective that can be in getting people to at least try fedi when there's a natural community around something.

                          @ikuturso @hpod16 Oh that one is nice... if this could be encouraged in Horizon projects as outreach that would be really helpful, too. I have been trying to convince project teams on this for ages but then the commms WP lead says "yeah no, we're using Facebook". And while there is something to be said for sharing info for stakeholder and public engagaement there where the stakeholders and public are, getting the same info on Fedi could also help expose more people to different social media.

                            @hpod16 @FediTips And look into something called a translation API - it’ll enable users to translate posts into their own language. I can get virtually everything translated into English.

                                    Something else to look into 🙂
                                    Europeans are proud of our many languages, but I have to say not every community manager in the EU social teams can speak all 24 EU languages. 😉 Machine translation like this can come in real handy. 💜

                                      @hpod16 DeepL is an AI powered translation service - it can probably be selected as the default translator for a Mastodon instance @FediTips will know more 🙂

                                      DeepL is probably my favourite machine translation service, also, it's European!

                                        @hpod16 @FediTips No worries. It is a little unreasonable to expect people to know 24 different languages! Machine translation - especially LLM based - is now very effective and useful.

                                          Yeah.
                                          We use machine translation to help us understand what people are commenting.
                                          But we never publish anything written or translated by AI. We do have colleagues in every EU Member State who can communicated in the respective languages
