BABY GOATS!!! The first mama has 2 healthy babies!
They are dried off, warmed up, and starting to try to nurse so I'm back inside warming up for a bit.
@sundogplanets #GoatWeek has begun! Time to stock up on popcorn.

They are dried off, warmed up, and starting to try to nurse so I'm back inside warming up for a bit.

It is seriously so cool to watch goat instincts. The mama immediately starts talking to her babies in a different voice than she uses to talk to me or the adult goats, and the babies almost immediately know how to start nursing, wagging their little tails and everything. The mama cleans off the babies by licking them, which also stimulates them to get up and nurse. Cute AND functional!
Maybe one other mama in early labour?

How much I have to reshuffle the goats tonight will depend on who has babies. Maybe none of the other 4 mamas who were due today will have babies until tomorrow? That would make things a lot easier... (I thought I had another heat lamp, but I guess the only extra one I have is over the ducklings that I impulse-bought the other day. Oops.)

@sundogplanets Ooops. Time to rummage around in the basement & see if you have any old 100W incandescent bulbs & a fixture to put them in? Maybe the big plant grow light incandescent bulbs? Or one of those small-but-mighty halogen desk lamps?
Or maybe just an old computer & ask the fediverse to crowdsource a program sure to keep it's fans spinning all night...
(It's either that or move the ducklings indoors, I guess!)

@sundogplanets We took in a pregnant stray cat once. Watching all those tiny, cleaned off kittins nersing all at once was profound somehow. The momma didn't like to be touched and wasn't big on me, but she let me hold her and clean the blood she couldn't get off her fur herself. I'm not a mom, which is maybe why this memory sticks with me so strongly.

@sundogplanets it's funny how much of the animal kingdom comes with such an effective initial firmware load, yet humans are little lumps of uselessness until we've had a ridiculously long training routine.
