Welcome to the #LongestTrainEU #CrossBorderRail record breaking thread!

@tml Hmmm. Maybe. Tenuous, but perhaps. (This was about 4km from the railway station)
@jon You went for a long refreshing walk along the road away from the centre of Kemijärvi?
-
@jon This is about reindeer. They roam freely in the marked area. Elk you find mostly in the south.
@jon Here is an elk sign for comparison. They should be taken seriously, elk accidents are no fun.
Reindeer, on the other hand, are pretty harmless and max a nuisance: https://youtube.com/watch?v=sRsIZiA8AZA

@tml Yes, to Kallaanvaara, to find this!

I can't believe Bilbao is basically right on that green line (although you won't pass through that city of course).

@thisislieven See the later posts! Somehow GPS is just not working.
@jon @thisislieven this might be due to Russian GPS jamming.

@sebwilken @jon Male reindeer can be pretty impressive size, too. Wouldn’t want to run into a such in a small car. At the very least those antlers will spoil the surface finish, I think.
This one is in middle Sweden, though. Maybe they are smaller in Lapland.
-
@jon I don't really know why it's this way. In the south you just get regular warning signs with moose or deer, maybe it's to make the difference clear (and the fact that the danger doesn't stop after a couple of km.)
Reindeer, being half tame behave quite differently than moose. They might decide to not be scared of a car at all.

@sebwilken That looks like an elk. But the reindeer one looks like a stag.

Hmmm 🤨
The live tracking thinks I have barely left Rovaniemi
But I most definitely have, and am two thirds of the way to Kemi
I simply cannot get any decent GPS signal here, even between carriages
@jon Some trains (for me, often TGVs) just block GPS - the signal just doesn't make it through whatever coating there is on their windows
There's being so far north that the number of satellites above the horizon is low, which means fewer with strong signals, which means train infrastructure may leave too few for your phone to do the 3D geometric calculations properly
And then there's WiFi assisted GPS, which sees your train WiFi and goes "Oh, that network ID? Forget satellites, Stockholm!"

Welcome to the #LongestTrainEU #CrossBorderRail record breaking thread!
This train journey starts in Kemijärvi
and ends in Lagos
18 trains, 100 hours 9 minutes, 4008km as the crow flies, 6281 route-km

In any case, have a nice trip!

@bellinghman Yes, but I even went between the carriages where normally you overcome that window problem and even that didn't work
Anyway it is back working now. Let's see how it goes tomorrow!

@zorun @BonjourTchoutchou Absolutely! And any pics I have on Flickr too.

Can some Finn please explain this road sign seen in Kemijärvi earlier?
Is it "you will only hit elk on the roads in half of Finland"? Is there some elk wall across the middle of the country?
EDIT: OK, it's a reindeer herding area
But I have questions!
The antlers on that sign are wrong.
And given I was a LONG way into the area, why do I need the map?
So that was Day 1 #LongestTrainEU #CrossBorderRail

@jon oh god, AI is coming for the trains!

@jon oh god, AI is coming for the trains!
No, that's vr technology from a long ago

@jon oh god, AI is coming for the trains!
@petes_bread_eqn_xls @jon
That was my first thought, too! Was this thing designed by AI?
-
No, that's vr technology from a long ago

@matt_jarvin @petes_bread_eqn_xls I agree it is not AI as it's old, but what's the story behind it?
