    @matt_jarvin @petes_bread_eqn_xls I agree it is not AI as it's old, but what's the story behind it?

    @jon @matt_jarvin @petes_bread_eqn_xls It’s just a joke by the designer Arto Kukkasniemi.

      @bellinghman Yes, but I even went between the carriages where normally you overcome that window problem and even that didn't work

      Anyway it is back working now. Let's see how it goes tomorrow!

      @jon Let's hope so

      I've been on ships where the phone GPS thought I was in Sweden when actually off the north coast of Norway, because of that assisted GPS thing believing Google Street View regarding network locations

          @jon FWIW I have an Android app on my phone named GPS Status (ad supported) that displays what satellites are in view. Right now right here, 71 satellites with 45 fixes. Up in Alaska last year, getting far fewer

                                  Can some Finn please explain this road sign seen in Kemijärvi earlier?

                                  Is it "you will only hit elk on the roads in half of Finland"? Is there some elk wall across the middle of the country?

                                  EDIT: OK, it's a reindeer herding area

                                  But I have questions!

                                  The antlers on that sign are wrong.

                                  And given I was a LONG way into the area, why do I need the map?

                                  It's the area where reindeer herding and breeding is taking place. Basically Finnish Lapland.

                                    @jon @bellinghman TGVs are especially "GPS-proof". (Oldish) Sleeper trains tend to let the signal go through but the very decayed train from Llubjana to Trieste was more touchy (here yes but 20 cm to left nothing). it's not linked to age brand new Avanti west coast train are totally gps transparent whereas the rather new bombardier main line swiss train seems to be very gps opaque.

                                    In brief, it's strange and unreliable.

                                        @tomtom

                                        Yes. Some airliners too

                                        I would expect the vestibule between carriages to be a bit more transparent, what with the flexible materials, but it does vary a bit. On the other hand, having popped up to Edinburgh and back on Lumo (one night up there), those trains are quite acceptable at the seats, and I can get pretty reliable speed metering on them

                                        (DigiHUD Android app uses GPS for speed measurement)

                                          @jon I don't really know why it's this way. In the south you just get regular warning signs with moose or deer, maybe it's to make the difference clear (and the fact that the danger doesn't stop after a couple of km.)

                                          Reindeer, being half tame behave quite differently than moose. They might decide to not be scared of a car at all.

                                          @tkalvas @jon

                                          I am guessing!!!

                                          But maybe it's just like a symbol? How would you show/display if you want to say "the northern part of Finland"? Most likely with a map wouldn't you?

                                          Just as someone decided to use the silhouette of the deer instead of just the head or hooves or footprint. Just because it's the most forward understandable symbol.

                                          What's missing on the sign is a symbol for "breeding". Maybe two Reindeers on top of each other and a smaller one? 😅
