Have you heard of Apple's decision on the rollout of Siri AI in Europe?
-
@webjac @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission I hate this statement "vote with your wallet". That was never an option. Wanna have low-sugar soft drinks? Have fun to vote for them with your wallet while the supermarket offers you hundreds of brands that *all* have basically the same ingredients. Wanna have a smartphone device that allows you to choose every software running on it yourself? Have fun finding one, as all big brands from Android to iphone force you zo use their app store.
@kaidu @webjac @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission I wonder how 'vote with your wallet' looks like in practise. Do you go back in time and not get an iPhone because Apple wants to force feed you their AI assistant? Or do you just throw away your iPhone, replace it with a phone of another brand, and then replace your Macbook, and spend forever migrating away from iCloud?
'Vote with your wallet' when you're in the Apple ecosystem comes with sacrifice, something the EU is fighting against.

️@EUCommission I’m usually a fan of European regulations, but in this case, I find the Commission’s reasoning questionable.
Apple runs the AI models either locally on the device or in a specially secured cloud environment. For both, Apple guarantees that no one except the user has access to the processed data. The effort involved in operating the private cloud compute is enormous and well-documented.
In return, the AI then gains comprehensive access to user data.

[1/3]@EUCommission As far as I know, Gemini as used by Apple is subject to precisely these restrictions in order to ensure data privacy. (https://security.apple.com/blog/expanding-pcc/)
If you now replace this secure AI environment with any other cloud provider, these guarantees disappear entirely. If Apple were to make the same APIs available to other AI models as it does to Gemini in the secure environment, users' data would be completely unprotected.

[2/3]@EUCommission You should take a look at who supports this EU regulation. In this case, it’s anyone who wants full access to Apple users’ data.
And yes, Apple likes to use these arguments to shut out the competition. But in this case, things are a bit more complicated.

@timsev @kaidu @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission not buy an iPhone until they release the model choice.
At least that’s what I’m planning to do

@EUCommission
Normally I am in heated agreement with EU style regulation but I'm not on this.VW only uses VW parts on VW cars. Do consumers have a right to buy a VW car and insist on a Toyota steering wheel? Obviously not.
@traveling_mike @EUCommission many parts of a VW car is not VW made. In fairness my friend has a GTI Golf with very cool modifications on it
-
@Ilka4You @EUCommission No, it’s not. For the past decade, Apple’s features alone were perfectly fine, and we never needed any third parties involved in the core functions. They should just leave it that way. Forcing this change is as absurd as requiring car manufacturers to let you swap engines from other brands, just because we’re in the EU and supposedly must have the option to choose which engine we want in our car. How stupid that would be?
@d4v
I don't know if you're old enough, but do you remember when Safari was the only browser available in Apple's products?Was your user experience better when you couldn't choose to use Chrome, Firefox or any other browser?
-
@webjac @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission It's an illusion that the consumer has anything to say here. As soon as the market is concentrated enough into a few companies they tell the consumer what he wants to buy and not the other way around.
In the end you don't vote with your wallet but will your Ballot, e.g. at the next election of the European parliament.
@kaidu @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission I admit in markets so concentrated is really hard to vote with your wallet. But you still can. I don’t plan on buy an iPhone until the choice of models is released. I also plan to vote on the European Parliament next opportunity.

@EUCommission I just find it amazing how different everyone’s take on this is. Apple says the EU is to blame for Siri AI not launching here, while you guys say it’s entirely Apple’s fault. Let’s be honest, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. I also think it’s good that we don’t just rubber-stamp solutions from tech giants like Apple as if there were no risks involved. However, I do wonder: Why didn’t Apple try harder? Apple has been stringing us along since 2024, promising that the AI features would come. In all that time, surely it should have been possible to find a constructive solution for everyone.
@tonio @EUCommission Apple has always been about vendor lock-in. Whether you believe it's because they insist on quality or because they can charge high prices because Apple products only work with Apple products, the fact remains that their brand was never about interoperability and choice, and that clashes with EU law.

[3/3]@EUCommission Addendum: It is highly doubtful whether Apple is capable of securely operating Apple Intelligence even within its own secure environment (on-device or in the Private Compute Cloud environment). The potential for attacks on the language models via the processed data is extensive.

@dazo @Paul_Harts @EUCommission
Helllloooo! The choice is to get a device other than an Apple device! Dang, some people can’t see past their own grudges.@jasper89 @dazo @Paul_Harts @EUCommission
It is 99% Apple or Google. If you consider that a choice, I have a bunch of two-party political systems to sell you...
-
@EUCommission @gklka Hey, you should tell this to the three people using any “alternative marketplace” on iOS.
As an Apple user, I don’t care who says what. I buy Apple products because of their functionality and seamless integration. These regulations are negatively impacting the user experience of this integration, which you clearly have no fucking clue about. Nobody asked you to disrupt this with any regulations.
TODAY: Man listens to an EU representative saying that the regulations don't prohibit the integration; complains about regulations that do not prohibit the integration.

Actually, if you pull it a bit further, you could probably also include @jolla and their #SailfishOS.

️@EUCommission Just ditch your iPhone and buy a Fairphone 6 with /e/os from Murena.com
I did

1/3 of the USA is positively engaged
1/3 of the USA is bigoted plutocrat agenda manipulated morons (MAGA)
1/3 of the USA is nonvoting losers (literally, they lose). entitled, lazy perfectionists and cynics who think they care about something but they only care about their holy precious self-regard. they invent any excuse to do nothing except whine and feel superior for doing nothing -

My bad. When I just said Apple and Google have 99% of the market share, I actually should have said 99.94%. I'm sorry.
-
@zsolt @algernon @EUCommission As much as I love Apple, they are for the money here and EU is for us.
@gklka @zsolt @algernon I, for one, wouldn’t mind if manufacturers would look at me as an adult, let me be wrong and learn from it.
I *hate* the erosion of ownership that is going on and that I cannot install an app without daddy Tim’s approval. I wanna own this device. But if the decision is made above my head, I cannot.
(US) Companies have too much control over our lives. I think the @EUCommission should be more aggressive.

@webjac @timsev @kaidu @rzeta0 @EUCommission Yeah but if you are deep into the ecosystem and you lose your phone or it breaks, the reality is you probably end up buying another iPhone even if it’s in the second hand market. I think we should welcome this laws because it benefits the consumer, and most importantly try distinguish the bs big companies say in order to keep imposing their monopolies. And I said this being balls deep in the ecosystem and loving their hardware
