@loke birth, marruage and death records are provincial juristiction. If you got any if those outside Alberta then the Alberta government has no record. Additionally records before WW2 are not complete due to lack of central record keeping at the time. For an elderly woman born before 1945 it is quite possible that a person coujd be well and truly screwed in this situation.

Same goes for immigrants from places of conflict or political turmoil. For thousands of Albertans this new unified ID has been a Franz Kafka nightmare.

@samk @JEmphatically I’m pretty sure that Canada’s polical and electoral systems are vastly more similar to Australia’s than they are to the US’. In fact, Australia’s bicameral legislature arguably makes it more similar to the US than Canada is.

I really like Australia’s mandatory voting policy, and wish more countries would implement it, but that seems to be the only relevant differentiator here.

I mean, I have heard the comparison many times, but this outcome of voter ID laws you are both experiencing is exactly the desired outcome of proposed federal law changes in the U.S.A. We hope that, if they pass, they will be challenged in SCOTUS because states are supposed to adopt their own voting rules.

@JEmphatically I am fortunate because my sister does currently have a BC ID card. However, I dread trying to get her another BC ID card in 2028, when her current ID runs out. How do I get a bed bound senior - who has her faculties but a limited capability to sit for long in a wheelchair - a new ID? I expect a photo will have to be taken in their office. They make it so frickin’ difficult. #DisenfranchingSeniors

@JEmphatically In Québec, they took baptimal/wedding certificates from churches that hadn't yet burned down, to create centralised database for persons' lives. So once you identify yourself, you can get your birth, marriage and death certificates.

I was once in a catch 22 where to get new birth certificate, I needed passport, but mine was expired and required new birth certificate to renew. There was process where you can get one by being sworn in to swear you are that person.

@jamesh @samk @JEmphatically I agree. My point was only that Canadian politics/elections are not American-like, simply because the lack of mandatory voting allows things like this. Most countries don’t have mandatory voting. It would be vastly more accurate, in this case, to say that both Canada and the US have English-like systems, seeing as that is the root system for all countries involved, and only Australia has deviated in this particular way.

I do, however, find it notable that Australia is apparently unique among these 21 countries in exempting people without a fixed address. So it’s not that it’s impossible to prevent people from voting, it’s just that you have to force them into homelessness, first, at which point very few people are going to complain much about discriminating against them, especially given the current housing situation in Australia.
