We followed some hashtags hoping they would give us a more organized feed. However, we still rarely see posts about #sustainability #farming #climatechange the #environment or #agriculture
Why is that? Are we missing something, or is there a better way to connect with people who share our interests and values on the #Fediverse if their posts are not appearing in our feed?
We would appreciate any advice from more experienced #Fediverse users.

Hi and welcome to the Fediverse.#SolarPunkSunday is an umbrella hashtag that you might like to follow. It covers repair cafes, libraries of things, renewable energy, cycling, food, cooking, gardening, crafts, biodiversity, rewilding, nature, nature-based learning, wildlife, volunteering, community-building and other good things, as well as solarpunk literature.
#ClimateDiary is a hashtag for us all to report on our local climate events. -
@sustainable_schools I know that many people will get angry when I say this: Exactly therefore, I have an account on Bluesky (only for reading) because the bubble for environment, farming etc. there is much bigger than here.
As well as the lack of people, the problem is that those who are here rarely use hashtags, nor have they opted-in to the search function. That makes it difficult to find them.

@sustainable_schools Following a hashtag will show you posts with that hashtag that have made their way to your instance (server). Posts usually get to your instance because someone on your instance is following the poster, which can be an issue for smaller instances. (There are things called relay servers to help with that, not all small instances make use of them.)
In addition to following hashtags, you might want to seek out something like fedigroups. You can find info at https://about.fedigroups.social/home

@sustainable_schools if you follow a channel, anything posted to that channel will appear in your feed (you are essentially following an account. )
To share with the group, just tag the group in your post.

one problem with this is that mastodon is *really tiny, compared to almost any other social media network
so there may just not be a lot of people in these areas

It is often asserted that small instances are more focused
I have not found this to be true, when I visit the recent post page (most versions of mastodon, if you go to an instance, there is a link that shows you recent posts from this server only)
but I've only done that with maybe 10 instances, so NOT a decent sample
something for a person interested in social networks to study !!!!!!

By subscribing to it you can discover many interested people, not only organisations or NGOs.Or try #ClimateDiary where people write about their every-day-life's experiences with the #climatecrisis (This post is quiet public for not spamming the hashtags)

@sustainable_schools @Pinchy63 you can set up a list, and add folks you find posting on topics you like. Then, when they omit hashtags, or use a new one, you still see them!

@sustainable_schools sometimes hashtags ebb and flow. Concepts like environmental sustainability are quite normal, so aren't necessarily tagged. You may have to branch out what tags you're following.
It's a good idea to look at what other tags are in use on the posts you do see and appreciate, and follow some of them as well. For example some "sustainability" posts are also tagged "solarpunk" or they may have more specific tags like "activetransport".
Looking through the timelines of people who post and boost things you're interested in is another good way to find the sort of the you want.@jetlagjen @sustainable_schools I'd agree, something like sustainability or agriculture is far too broad a topic so I doubt many people would bother tagging it. Maybe be a bit more specific with which particular aspect you're searching for?
