A question:
Sometimes I look up an account that I haven't heard from in a while, and the account is there but all the posts are gone.
Is this something that happens if they are inactive for some time? if so, how long before posts just disappear?

@5ciFiGirl @FediTips I think that happens if an account blocks you, but there could be other reasons too?

Each account can set their own auto-deletion criteria. The person who posts can set a length of time after which they will disappear. You can also set criteria like "only delete if it had less than 2 boosts".
I'm not sure if servers can set defaults for that.

no, the posts are all gone on the original server too, and we are still mutuals. (Actually the one I found today just says I am following.) This person: @Jennifer

@5ciFiGirl @FediTips Most likely explanation is that they have post auto-delete enabled after a set period of time and they haven't been active for a while. Or they might have actively deleted their posts.

@5ciFiGirl@starbase80.wtf @FediTips@social.growyourown.services I don't believe it's something that happens, but if you are looking on your own instance, it might be that your local copies aren't there. It's always worth it to go to the instance itself to see if that's what's happening there as well.
Often my "follow requests" from unknown people show up with nothing or next to nothing in terms of posts. I'm finding that's rarely a reflection of what's on the instance itself. -

@5ciFiGirl@starbase80.wtf @FediTips@social.growyourown.services On the mastodon instance I just checked, looking at a profile, you have to check the meatball menu to get the 'view on...'. On this Sharkey instance, I just go to the top, and there's a clear thing that says it's a remote account, and a link to the account.

Yup, this seems the most likely explanation if the account hasn't been active in a while. Some people prefer to have their posts automatically delete after a certain time period.
