Does anyone have links to a good explainer of how internet access in the Gaza strip works? There's this idea going round that any information coming out of Gaza must be fake because all internet infrastructure has been destroyed, but I follow a number of people from Gaza who I at least am confident are where they say are. Can anyone recommend any reliable articles on how people are getting the internet working over there?
@afewbugs I've wondered about that myself and just assumed there would be some kind of mesh network going on with an exit node somewhere else. But I haven't seen any information to support this (actually I haven't seen any information on this topic at all), this is just what I imagined.

the thing is there is also a strong motivation behind claiming everything is fake, its a direct consequence of the widespread denialismthis one take might be worth dissecting especially with the current way it plays out on fedi, i would be careful though to not get exhausted too much while digging into this/or the new denialism of the day, because thats the purpose of strategies moving the goal posts, cause exhaustion

@aral do you have any sort of debunking resources you can recommend please? To be clear I fully accept that there are people out there getting on the internet somehow, but I don't know enough about how to be able to explain it to others

LTE mobile network is resilient provided base stations have power (which can be from both grid and solar/batteries), it would not be easy to fully destroy it (anywhere in the World) without bombing every Telephone Exchange in country flat and ground troops uprooting fibre optic cable, even in larger wars elsewhere (with older tech but similar locations required) combatants have struggled to achieve this.
I constantly have to use various security software to prevent what I assume is Israeli activists trying to overload the Gaza mobile telephone network by repeatedly dialling multiple numbers in the country all at once (they look for insecure VOIP telephone systems to target),which they wouldn't be doing if it didn't exist...

People only have access to WiFi, which is why they will go to great lengths to go to cafes to use their internet. Cafes charge a fee to use their internet. Or, if they’re fortunate enough, they have their own routers. But Israel also controls the electricity, and if they choose to cut the electricity at any given time then people lose access to internet. You can also ask any Palestinian for a more detailed explanation and they’d be happy to explain.
