The street I live on is treeless and lined on both sides with 4-story stone buildings, and buses, ambulances, cars, and trucks use it nose-to-tail. Ambient noise can hit 90dB at pavement level: noise-cancelling earbuds are a survival tool.

Not to mention that folks on the spectrum are prone to noise pollution induced meltdowns.

TLDR: this guy is a pompous prescriptive ass who needs to be fucked in one ear with bagpipes and in the other with a road drill.

@cstross I'm not going to click on the link, but I agree with you 100%. I very rarely leave my home without my noise-cancelling headphones. It's loud and overwhelming out there if you live in a city. Not to even mention how loud ambulances are in Edinburgh, they're going to give me a heart attack one day.

      @cstross

You just hit the nail on the head for one reason I live way up in the mountains.

A few times a day I get a truck with a jake brake or someone with a car stereo so loud it rattles my windows from a 100 meters away. And this time of year I have helicopters going overhead to check on wildfires.

But that's pretty much it for loud noises bothering me. (And I am prone to noise pollution meltdowns. I can't stand echoey places full of people like food courts.)

      [contd]

But the nights here can be special. I love sitting outside looking up at the stars, listening to frogs croaking and dogs barking in the distance. It can be so quiet I can hear the river flowing a kilometer away.

Sometimes I do get coyotes yapping like demented mad scientists (which means lots more dogs barking). But even then it's not a problem for me.

And then I travel somewhere and need headphones or ear buds again…

@cstross Judging by the other titles in the "Hill I will die on" category, they're intentionally provoking their readers with random opinions telling other people how to live.

He can go up that hill and die, as loud as he likes. I'll have my noise cancelling headphones on, chilling to Zero 7, so I won't notice.

@cstross Noise cancelling headphones have their place. Absolutely.
Not everywhere. If you, say, order a coffee from the nice person behind the counter you really should remove them. Basic politeness.
Other than "human interaction needed" or "canceling out traffic noise and blocking the full path by rollerskating left/right/left/right oblivious to everything" I see no problem. Still, I find it a pity if you don't hear the birds, the wind in the leaves in the forest... but that's your problem.

@drchaos The only audible birds where I live are the fucking seagulls, demanding your food with menaces. The nearest green space is half a kilometer away across two traffic-bearing roads. (There are crossing places: not the point, though.)

@cstross (yeah, totally got that from your post, and I agree, the asthmatic coughing of traffic fume poisoned seagulls is not what I had in mind when I mentioned birds singing).

@cstross given his opinion and view of “managers” shows just of our touch he really is. Any manager tha needs to “drop by” and doesn’t get what the headphones means is not a good manager anyway! Or maybe it is me I’ve not had a local (as in continent and at least 5hrs TZ difference) manager in more than 21 years 😃

@AmazingMeagen It's transparently clickbait, and ridiculously effective—to an extremely annoying degree!

Weird hill for him to die on, but at least he's dead, I guess.

I'm neurospicy. Earphones have kept me sane over the past 30 years. I ain't giving them up.
