Get rid of open-plan offices, allow work from home when possible, and impose strict noise and emissions limits on vehicles - including stereo systems. More public transportation/less traffic. More parks.

I'm old enough to have actually worked in such places. It was awesome. We could get work done, on working hours, on the premises. It was fabulous.

@cstross To be fair, some of this "The hill I will die on" series is really bizarre - this is not the weirdest by far. I know Mr Brightside is a staple of nights out and so on, but making it mandatory for weddings is patently ridiculous.

@cstross Fucking idiot as well as pompous prescriptive ass. Earbuds are frequently used as essentially lower-cost BT hearing aids. The amount of control they give you over your sonic environment is incredible, from amplifying speech to adding a little white noise to (counterintuitively) cut tinnitus, to cranking tunes to drown out some knob busily dying on a hill of his own bullshit.

Seconded. I recently got a pair of Apple AirPods Pro 3rd gen, and they stay in my ears all day. Very much improved pass-through amplification per my audiogram, over the 2nd gen, 8 hour battery life and fast initial charge, and very good noise cancellation. I spend several hours a week on paralift transit buses with loud engines and louder aircon, but I can still listen to music, which saves at least part of my sanity. -
