The street I live on is treeless and lined on both sides with 4-story stone buildings, and buses, ambulances, cars, and trucks use it nose-to-tail. Ambient noise can hit 90dB at pavement level: noise-cancelling earbuds are a survival tool.
Not to mention that folks on the spectrum are prone to noise pollution induced meltdowns.
TLDR: this guy is a pompous prescriptive ass who needs to be fucked in one ear with bagpipes and in the other with a road drill.
I just love listening to people explain that other people should stop doing things because . . .

@cstross yeah fuck this guy

@cstross Fucking idiot as well as pompous prescriptive ass. Earbuds are frequently used as essentially lower-cost BT hearing aids. The amount of control they give you over your sonic environment is incredible, from amplifying speech to adding a little white noise to (counterintuitively) cut tinnitus, to cranking tunes to drown out some knob busily dying on a hill of his own bullshit.
[edit: "hearing" aids]
@eedly @cstross
Seconded. I recently got a pair of Apple AirPods Pro 3rd gen, and they stay in my ears all day. Very much improved pass-through amplification per my audiogram, over the 2nd gen, 8 hour battery life and fast initial charge, and very good noise cancellation. I spend several hours a week on paralift transit buses with loud engines and louder aircon, but I can still listen to music, which saves at least part of my sanity. -

@cstross this kind of person is exactly the reason why I wear headphones in the street

@SimonLandmine He's definitely one of the P7, though—the Pale Patriarchal Putocratic Protestant Penis People of Power
@cstross Ooh, that's a good one!

'fucked in one ear with bagpipes and in the other with a road drill'
With a 6ft something scottish bagpiper blowing all he can in the bagpipe, I suppose?

@ParadeGrotesque @cstross Surely it's the squeezing that makes the difference, not the blowing?

I came here to say this

@cstross you can take my headphones out of my cold dead ears.

@cstross Although on trains etc I would rather prefer people don't put in earphones that are leaky as hell, like the Apple ones.

@cstross Out-of-tune bagpipes, with the reed replaced by a kazoo.

@cstross classic guardian "i can't tell my feelings from rational thought and i'm very important" article.
-
@cstross previously this was obviously the guy who is upset someone is reading a newspaper on the train instead of paying attention to them.
-
@cstross @grayabbott The dude (Stephan Stern) completely misses the point. The ear buds are the symptom, not the problem.
Get rid of open-plan offices, allow work from home when possible, and impose strict noise and emissions limits on vehicles - including stereo systems. More public transportation/less traffic. More parks.
*edit to add author name*
@bubbajet @cstross @grayabbott
"strict noise and emissions limits"
Including the revolting chemical stink which was marketed to you as "perfume"."But it contains ambergris, and that's natural!" is not the defence you think it is. Rubbing the anal glands of a Himalayan deer and whale vomit on you in a public enclosed space isn't a good stench.
