There are better ways to protect children online:

⚫️ Tackle business models that reward engagement maximisation

⚫️ Restrict intrusive profiling and behavioural advertising

⚫️ Mandate giving people control over recommender systems and feeds

⚫️ Support social media models that put people in control

@openrightsgroup yes - the harms are due to exploitative product design.

And yes, that is driven by the surveillance ads business model... But good luck trying to stop them using that. The only way past #bigtech product is around them.

The UK social media ban is coming.

That means every adult having to show their ID to get online.

Age verification puts privacy at risk. Curbs freedom of expression. And simply doesn't work to keep kids safe online.

The government needs to change course. But the clock is ticking.

If only we had entire advisory boards we could ignore before pushing forward any legislation.

The UK government have always treated petitions as an after thought. The only real action we can take is to encourage our friends, families and acquaintances to move away from proprietary social media that will compelled by law to comply over to self-hosted, free and open source platforms in countries beyond the reach of the United Kingdom's government.

@openrightsgroup “That means every adult having to show their ID to get online“ is quite obviously and provably wrong. It is, as you put it, a “social media ban”, not a requirement to show ID to get online.

Online and Social Media are not the same thing, one is a subset of the other.

@patrickleavy @openrightsgroup you're missing the problem, age verification laws effectively *make your alternatives illegal* because they can't adopt the sort of intrusive, privacy-violating technologies that the laws require

                    @openrightsgroup

I'd like to see anti trust enforcement that breaks meta/Facebook up. A bunch of the reported harms all involve zuckerberg owned services. Maybe things would be better if we got rid of him.

@_hic_haec_hoc @openrightsgroup yes that might be true for some, if they share sufficient features to be classed as social media in the same way.

It is probably hoping too much that the definition would have some nuance (recommender algorithms etc).

Given that lobbyists are involved in writing the incoming rules, I suspect that we don't live in a world where nuance is on our side.

That means every adult having to show their ID to get online.

Age verification puts privacy at risk. Curbs freedom of expression. And simply doesn't work to keep kids safe online.

The government needs to change course. But the clock is ticking.

@openrightsgroup This act will conveniently make Mastodon and other non-major platforms effectively illegal in the UK.

Only the big ones will have the resources to implement this..
