    @the_wub @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette I get that. Francesca Albanese doesn’t seem like an argument against cutting those ties. Correctly pointing out that the US can do the same to anybody only reinforces that.
    I feel like we’re largely in agreement, but we’re getting tied up by language. I’m not sure how to fix that, except to try to clarify.

    "In July 2025, the United States Department of the Treasury under the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Albanese under Executive Order 14203, naming her a "specially designated national", thus forbidding all US persons and companies from doing business with her, except as necessary to the wind down of any transaction involving Albanese until 8 August "

    All she had to do was leave the US. Georgetown university isn't the only university in the world. The executive order only forbids American businesses and persons from interacting with her.

    Simple solution, leave the Disunited States of Trumpistan. Live long and prosper!

      So do it on a country by country bas. Or better yet, think smaller - community by community. Small is beautiful. And dirt cheap to run. About the same cost as a pizza every two weeks.

      Plenty of people self-finance their hobby sites out of pocket, no ads, no patreon, no tip jar. Why not this?

      Just paid my hosting bill (yes it's gone up) $156/year. 4 domain registrations is another $100/year. Way less than an extra large pizza and fries every month.

      If a couple dozen people aren't willing to collectively chip in $1/month each to do something they're supposed to be passionate about, they're not THAT passionate.

      @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette IT'S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY!

      It's about the fact that non-tech people cannot self-host, for fuck's sake! And no, they cannot be expected to just learn that over night either. Maybe they could be expected to find someone capable to do it for them? Well guess what the whole fucking point of the collective was!

      This is like a village getting cut off from the road network and you going "just build your own airplanes, the knowledge is all public, duh!"

        @david42 @barbra @anneroth @cavallette maybe, but that would come at the loss of interoperability with... the existing internet, basically. So that would make their email servers and blogs much harder to reach for "normies", which... is probably still a success for Trump?

        @siguza @barbra @anneroth @cavallette Yeah, but once their stuff is back online, reliably, in some form, there will be proxies for the normies to use, at least for R/O stuff like reading blogs.

          Plenty of hosting companies well packaged with cpanel, a web administration interface with scripts to install all sorts of software, so you don't need to know how to self host, as you put it, " for Fuck sake.'

          Blogs, bulletin boards, email accounts, content management systems, etc. It's all there.

          You can also hire someone to help. There's plenty of people willing to help on an hourly rate.

          "But it should be freeee!!!" Hope - people gotta eat. It's only fair.
