    There seems to never be an end to the barrage of people who need to re-write history to accord with their own ideology.

    But here we are again.

    And it takes a pretty admirable determination to patiently, over and over, unpack the lies and the rhetorical sleights of hand. So a big thanks to Lachlan Peters for doing it. #denialism #ideology #cambodia

      Whether it is white supremacists denying the evils of slavery, Holocaust deniers, Russians whitewashing Stalin or those trying to downplay the murderous waves of Mao's policies, I find the sin of rewriting history to serve ideology is maybe the worst intellectual sin of all time. Mostly because it unforgivably ignores the testimony of lived experience.

      That, to me, is beyond contempt.

        So, I get it, right now very few people have the bandwidth to get upset that some asshole is denying the extent of the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia 50 years ago, but it is the same fucking mindset as the people questioning the number of dead in Gaza right now.

        It is a despicable practice that simply leads to more killing.

          And, let me be absolutely honest, I have a very personal stance in this. Because you cannot have gone to Tuol Sleng and not have one.

            @Remittancegirl people have many excuses for not wanting to know

            I think often people don't know what to do with the emotional reaction

            It's easy (for many) with the Nazis, you feel outrage - but ultimately justified in "your" part in WW2 and tell yourself a simple story of right Vs wrong

              @Remittancegirl

              The funny thing is, denialism is largely unnecessary. You can leave the Truth out in plain sight and people with colonized minds will still not see it, too distracted by bread and circuses ( Domino’s & NFL ).

              Here’s a list I have compiled, of truths most Americans know, but don’t see. This is a work-in-progress, so please feel free to suggest other Big Truths, sitting out in plain sight, that people know, but ignore.

                @Remittancegirl I spent a decade being chilled by how many people didn't care about Syria as it was playing out in real-time. (They stopped counting casualties for a long time.) One explanation is that most human beings can't comprehend numbers after a certain point, and it becomes too abstract to care.

                Another explanation is that we don't talk about things enough because we want to focus on how much better everything is now.

                  @Remittancegirl I get your point. It is about saying "This is how it always has been, so it must be right and good" - both of which are wrong.

                  It ignores the real experience of those who may have fought to change things. Of those who lived when things were different (better or worse). It removes any real consideration of "could it be different".

                  I think it is very clearly shown in the support for Capitalism: "We have always had this and it works, so don't challenge it".

                    @Remittancegirl

                    Suspect that we're on the cusp of 'rewriting history to serve ideology' being turbocharged by AI.

                    We may even end up without a decent grasp on the present.

                      No, it's not. It is about disputing many historians, population specialists, genocide forensic scientists.
