Edit: can we get home EV chargers shared with other users?

Trying to solve my own problem and also trying to find existing solutions online discourse.

Can you help me think about this or point at existing solutions/conversations?

    Hypothesis:
    1. for owners of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) without dedicated home/work charging it’s already hard to find available (convenient) charging stations. (Most cannot use the high speed DC chargers)
    2. if gas prices continue to rise, it will encourage PHEV users to seek more charging over gasoline usage.
    3. Most people with home EV chargers have lots of available time when they are not charging.
    4. A potential solution would be to find a trusted way to connect home EV charging (particularly combined with home solar during the day) with PHEV users.

What are the barriers? Is this model working anywhere?

I started a shallow-dive into this, and it seems like there are some systems set up for this in the UK and maybe Canada. But I’m unclear about the usage/adoption. Also PlugShare allows listing home chargers but has no built-in way for owners of home chargers to receive payment.

        @lisavogtsf

Here in Denmark the most used model is Monta (https://monta.com/) which allow you to offer paid access to your home charger. You can set a fixed price, a cost based price and allow access only at certain hours of the day - basically you can tailor it to your own needs.

Monta takes a cut of all transactions, and you need to have an account with them in order to charge from the available chargers (there are both large commercial actors and private chargers). The app has a wallet for both paying for charging as well as receiving payment from other users that have used your charger.

You can charge for free on your own charger without any money going to and from Monta.

@lisavogtsf I don't have any links to give you so I know this response is likely of limited value, but I know for sure 100% that there were sites/apps like this when EVs and PHEVs were new and there was no charging network like there is today. Homeowners with charging stations posted their location and anyone with access to the site could drive up and charge for free.

I think a relatively easy solution could be to put chargers on every streetlight pole in residential areas with overnight street parking. The wiring and infrastructure is mostly there already. Some circuits would need augmented, but we aren't talking about L2 chargers here (for phevs).

In the UK, a company called Co-Charger lets you rent your charger to other people when you aren't using it.

It's hard to tell, to be honest. Prices are usually a bit lower than at commercial chargers, but availability and placement can be more hit-and-miss.

I know there is quite a number of Airbnb's, vacation houses and the like that uses it to offer charging for their guests, but I think that the scenario where you drive up to someone's driveway and plug in your car is less common.

In general we have a plethora of commercial chargers available in Denmark. I live in a small rural village, and there are 8 commercial destination chargers available, and I know that we'll have two fast chargers within a couple of months as well.

I’m trying to say that located some internet conversations about Airbnb hosts seeking to find a way to charge guests if they wanted to use an EV charger.

I had less luck finding similar conversations for regular people with home EV chargers (not Airbnb hosts) wanting to find a way to share their chargers and be compensated.

                              But I haven’t researched extensively.
