@dbattistella That's nothing more than modern-day book burning.

This is the magnificent library Anthropic amassed, before destroying it because it gave them a legal copyright loophole.

Anthropic spent billions of dollars to slice the spines off millions of books, including very rare ones.

AI companies are purchasing large quantities of used and rare books and scanning their contents to train LLMs. They then turn the originals to pulp.

The sum of human thought, digitized and shredded. Every book that gets scanned disappears from the physical world permanently.

Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.

@EricBono Yes, but if you destroy the book, no one can accuse you of having copied it, or demand payment for it.

Right, right, I didn't mean to leave out the sheer criminality aspect. The incompetence isn't a symptom. It's a tool.

@dbattistella This picture doesn't make sense to me. If this is storage, why are all these boxes open? If this is processing, why are all these boxes open? None of them appear to be full.

I would expect, if they are processing the books, that there would be most of them in storage, then some number would be open and being scanned. After the scanning, they are all just loose pages, so I would expect to see a discard bin somewhere, with not defined "book" in sight.

@dbattistella Can't wait until we simply repurpose the book guillotines for use on the billionaires who paid for them.

@dbattistella Everybody has already drawn the comparison to the book _Rainbows End_, right? It's weird to keep re-encountering SF novels this often IRL. Something something future unevenly distributed something something Torment Nexus.

@dbattistella Any book that has survived wars, fires and centuries should be digitised for the greater good.

If it's a generic font book shat out of machine, digitize and bin it as you would a CD.

Anthropic should be told to make these works freely available.

The past 100yrs of gatekeeping knowledge behind absurd paywalls in ivory towers is not a great model to the extent most academics I know just sail the high seas as basic.

@dbattistella But is that email really better with AI? Because I'm climbing to the top of a hill with a flag that says it is not.

This is the magnificent library Anthropic amassed, before destroying it because it gave them a legal copyright loophole.

@dbattistella Until this I was thinking guillotines, but for the punishment to fit the crime it should be being burned at the stake.
