Though I am currently on a great instance run by an amazing admin and mods, I am seriously considering going for a single(ish) user Mastodon instance hosted by Masto Host (or similar).

Though I am currently on a great instance run by an amazing admin and mods, I am seriously considering going for a single(ish) user Mastodon instance hosted by Masto Host (or similar). Is there any reason I shouldn’t?
Anything I should know or read before doing it? Any traps I might fall into? Assume I am quite able to fuck stuff up and wouldn’t mind a bit of handholding to avoid said fuckups.
Any success stories to encourage me or horror stories to put me off?

I've tried to do a non-technical guide to making your own Mastodon instance here: https://growyourown.services/making-your-own-mastodon-server-in-10-steps
There are also things you can do as an admin to get more of the Fedi visible on your server: https://fedi.tips/using-relays-to-quickly-expand-a-servers-view-of-the-fediverse
Added to that, the imminent update of Mastodon will make running your own instance much easier as all replies from all threads will be automatically shown even if you're on a single-user server.
I'd say try it and see how it goes
