What is Fedigroups now?

What is Fedigroups now? I just responded to a post, and now a bot is telling that I am not part of a group, and I am very confused.

@rootsandcalluses I'm guessing you need to follow the group account before.

@oblomov But I didn't ask to be part of a group. I just responded to a message.

@rootsandcalluses ah, in this case I'm guessing the message you replied to was posted to a fedigroup, so when you replied the fedigroup was among the recipients, thus triggering the fedigroups bot complaint. The fact that we have to remove the fedigroup from the reply recipients / mentioned people to avoid this is definitely poor UX 8-/

@rootsandcalluses Maybe @FediTips can chime in with an explainer

@oblomov Okay, so it is an annoying boost bot that I have to actively avoid triggering? Can't people just use, you know, hashtags? I am getting to old for this shit...

@rootsandcalluses IIRC it's a bot / system designed to emulate within a microblogging system like mastodon something that resembles newsgroups, forum sections, reddit forums, threadiverse channels, etc. You post to it, and it boosts your post to anyone subscribed. So it works differently from hashtags, especially across servers, because of how federation works.

@oblomov Okay, so if I just block the entire server, I could not interact with all the bots?
I see that it is different, I just really don't care for any of that.

@rootsandcalluses @oblomov Yeah, just block it, job done. Adds nothing. People just have weird ideas.

FediGroups is a discussion group system, you can see a group's posts by following its account and post to a group by mentioning it.
When you mention a group, it boosts that post to all the other people following the group.
However, some groups require following them before they will boost your post, so I think that's why the bot was telling you you weren't part of the group?
