why?! why would apple willingly throw away the market to CapCut et al?!

(get this: i once imported vertical videos into iMovie, rotated them all -90º, edited horizontally with my head tilted sideways, it hurt, exported my final project in horizontal ratio, then rotated the final file back to vertical in QuickTime player 😵‍💫)

@cabel Final Cut supports this right? I mean, point heard on iMovie— but it kinda seems to me that iMovie / GarageBand are on their way out, leaving Final Cut and Logic. I could be very wrong!

Anyway— the reason you don’t use Final Cut is because... it feels too heavy for this task? You haven’t purchased it? I’m curious!

@cabel that sounds absolutely hilarious as I’m sitting here envisioning that. 🤣

@cabel BTW it looks like from the Projects view, you can go to New → New App Preview. The first video clip in the timeline must be a vertical video clip (like one shot on iPhone). In the project settings, then you’ll see that it’s 1080 × 1920.

            HOPE THIS HELPS

@cabel Further, you should be able to choose an arbitrary aspect ratio for your project. Sometimes the source footage is vertical. Sometimes it’s a unusual aspect ratio. Or maybe it’s a screen recording of an arbitrary portion of your display. Maybe you want the final product to be square. If letterboxing or pillarboxing is required for final playback so be it, but don’t force me to bake it into the video.

I can’t remember the last time Apple made any significant software changes designed around the needs and desires of the user.

@cabel Pretty sure it's because everything desktop is the unwanted stepchildren at Apple today - you're supposed to be on your phone (because it generates so much more juicy data), including editing your videos there.

Too bad the native editor in iOS also sucks 😫
