I am a little shocked at the lack of solidarity I see between artists working in different mediums wrt genAI.
Musicians who would never use it to make music use it to make cover art
Graphic artists reach for it to make music over their videos
Writers use it to illustrate their articles
And, considering software development an art, many use it to create web sites or apps to host their art.
None of this is necessary. All of this is harmful to the other artists.
Collaborate ffs.
Stop it.

@limebar FWIW I largely see the opposite in my scene. In fact, even artists who post AI generated show flyers get reamed pretty badly for it.
I think it's a matter of how much the artist truly values the creative process, the human expression aspects of their art. Which, I mean, is what art *is* at the core, right?

@jordan omg yeah, show flyers done with AI are so annoying in particular. I am not going to that show.

@limebar eh, creative destruction.
Use the new tool as its intended to be used. As a research tool or as a replacement for a job you were never going to hire someone for.
I know a local artist who uses AI for generating models. He asks it to show an animal or item in a certain pose. Then uses that inspiration to paint on canvas.
Its difficult to get humans to do things. AI will just do things.
-
@FediThing yeah, it is a trust killer for me
@limebar @FediThing Yep, same here. When I see someone saying their music is all their own work but they've illustrated it with AI slop, I have a really hard time believing they didn't also use it as part of making their music.
That stuff is designed to be addictive and to manipulate feelings of shame and inadequacy in ways that incentivize misrepresenting the output.

@limebar this is basically just a prime example of atomised society isn't it. I think this isn't a side effect, it's the intended result.

@txtechnician @limebar No, don't use it at all. It will not do it right, and it will alter your initial idea in ways that you can't just set aside once you've seen it, and that will be plagiarizing others' art without you knowing or being able to know.
If you need to see poses, you can buy (or nowadays, 3D print) poseable models. Or ask a person to pose for you to quickly sketch. There is no excuse for using slop for figuring out poses.

I am definitely not an artist, but I am a former teacher, and education was an important element of my work almost all of my life.
What I'll say is that doing things that are difficult is how we learn and grow as a person.
If we use LLMs to avoid things that are difficult in life, we will be smaller as people for it. -

@limebar Also disappointing to see nonprofit organizations that allegedly exist to educate and advocate for artists using genAI to create promotional materials. Funded by public money and membership fees and they turn to services built on wage theft from the very people they claim to represent. smh

So I run our family DND games. We used to have time to do campaigns. But life got real busy and we could only do one offs.
I use AI for (so much fun).
My 10yo nephew wanted to try DM. I gave him books and such and let him do it.
He was broken by the end of it. Because he used AI thinking it was what I was doing. (Near tears).
I had a talk with him after about needing to understand the basis of the game before using AI.
-
@FediThing This is exactly why I'm immediately unsubscribing from channels that start using YouTube's AI thumbnail generator. Okay cool. How long before the script is AI slop? How long before instead of filming b-roll or buying from stock footage sellers, they just AI slop that? Time to get out at the first sign of rot.

@limebar ALL of this, plus - a bit tangiential, but it really boils my bubbles when online petitions use AI art. i've even seen it from the lines of green-fucking-peace, of all orgs. as you say: total trust killer.

@limebar that's exactly what i think every time i see a music video obviously created with genAI.
How little respect these musicians must have for other art.

@dalias @limebar @FediThing Personally even if I believed them the slop bits still spoil the whole thing. Proper fly in the ointment situation always. Why would I care about something authored by someone who's not bothered by all the massive issues around "AI", theirs will be a voice of mediocrity at best.

@limebar A psychological issue LLM use leverages to great effect, the promise it'll do the things you don't have the skills for though you'd never use it for the things you do have the skills for. Problem is that the LLM is evil and untrustworthy, whatever the LLM makes will suck and your use makes everything about your output questionable by association.

@limebar in dark evil corpo land, now everyone thinks they can have ai do someone else's role, but ai certainly can't do theirs. It's a huge cluster, trust is broken, teams disintegrated. Really awesome stuff. Sounds like the same happens in the creative world.

@limebar
As a writer who hates plagiarism bots, I never even seriously considered using the things for cover art or illustration. I'll go without a cover if I can't afford a real artist (since I have zero design sense so I don't think anything I make will enhance my writing). My websites - such as they are - are handcrafted. I don't even use HTML editors - text editors for the win!So, yeah, my website is ugly? Well, it's human made. As is my writing.
