@FediThing This is exactly why I'm immediately unsubscribing from channels that start using YouTube's AI thumbnail generator. Okay cool. How long before the script is AI slop? How long before instead of filming b-roll or buying from stock footage sellers, they just AI slop that? Time to get out at the first sign of rot.

I am a little shocked at the lack of solidarity I see between artists working in different mediums wrt genAI.
Musicians who would never use it to make music use it to make cover art
Graphic artists reach for it to make music over their videos
Writers use it to illustrate their articles
And, considering software development an art, many use it to create web sites or apps to host their art.
None of this is necessary. All of this is harmful to the other artists.
Collaborate ffs.
Stop it.
@limebar ALL of this, plus - a bit tangiential, but it really boils my bubbles when online petitions use AI art. i've even seen it from the lines of green-fucking-peace, of all orgs. as you say: total trust killer.

@limebar that's exactly what i think every time i see a music video obviously created with genAI.
How little respect these musicians must have for other art.
-
@limebar @FediThing Yep, same here. When I see someone saying their music is all their own work but they've illustrated it with AI slop, I have a really hard time believing they didn't also use it as part of making their music.
That stuff is designed to be addictive and to manipulate feelings of shame and inadequacy in ways that incentivize misrepresenting the output.
@dalias @limebar @FediThing Personally even if I believed them the slop bits still spoil the whole thing. Proper fly in the ointment situation always. Why would I care about something authored by someone who's not bothered by all the massive issues around "AI", theirs will be a voice of mediocrity at best.

@limebar A psychological issue LLM use leverages to great effect, the promise it'll do the things you don't have the skills for though you'd never use it for the things you do have the skills for. Problem is that the LLM is evil and untrustworthy, whatever the LLM makes will suck and your use makes everything about your output questionable by association.

@limebar in dark evil corpo land, now everyone thinks they can have ai do someone else's role, but ai certainly can't do theirs. It's a huge cluster, trust is broken, teams disintegrated. Really awesome stuff. Sounds like the same happens in the creative world.

@limebar
As a writer who hates plagiarism bots, I never even seriously considered using the things for cover art or illustration. I'll go without a cover if I can't afford a real artist (since I have zero design sense so I don't think anything I make will enhance my writing). My websites - such as they are - are handcrafted. I don't even use HTML editors - text editors for the win!So, yeah, my website is ugly? Well, it's human made. As is my writing.

agreed! I was appalled to see a professional photography association post a video to YouTube on how to use genAI text to establish 'your' brand. Serious cognitive dissonance.
But totally in line with the position that AI is fine to use in any area of creative endeavor except for mine.

@limebar Related (and fixed the link to reference the actual thing I was thinking of.

Essentially people are more critical in areas they are experts in and more naive in areas they are not.
So a musician might hate AI generated music, but think the AI generated graphics look great, etc.

@dalias @limebar @FediThing I sort of can believe them, because despite everything, I try to see the good in people... but it still spoils the thing to the point I'm not really interested anymore.

@limebar Commissioning other artists works as long as you got money to spend - or can offer to make something with your art skill that the other person needs. If you have neither money nor energy to create something extra, I guess many tend to fall back on using AI. Personally, I do think that's a reasonable choice, but I wish there were other ways out there to collaborate.

@limebar I kinda get it? I run free improv shows but have zero artistic / design talent, and definitely no budget (I'm buying stickers and recording equipment out of my own pocket). Getting artwork done free / cheap but also on a schedule is nearly impossible.
I wish there was a way to trade work or something? But I don't know

for those saying they don't know how or can't afford to collaborate... Please turn to the Commons
Learn about public domain and creative commons licensing
Start with a video image or sound in the Commons and manipulate it to make it your own.
Or don't bother manipulating if the license doesn't allow or you don't have the skill.
Either way it'll be better and appreciated more

@limebar yeah. like, i understand getting good cover art as a musician is rough, i'm kinda in that situation rn (i would be releasing stuff if i had cover art), but stuff being hard is part of making art. i think it's sort of part of a toxic mindset i see in some artists that any challenges they face that aren't "purely" part of their art are just something to be sidestepped or shoved aside

if someone is using genAI in any way they are automatically not an artist. artists, by definition, make things. typing into a text box is not making anything.

@marionline @limebar ehh, that's why i taught myself how to use Photoshop and do basic video editing for myself as a poor musician. like, that's kinda how you had to do it before AI. AI feels like a lazy cop out

@limebar As an author, I’ve never used Gen AI for anything, for exactly the reasons you say.
