@Em0nM4stodon Work in a Hospital in Canada supporting the IT infrastructure - and yeah, we do!
We have an offline physical PC preloaded with PDFs connected to USB printers available at all units in case the main EMR were to somehow spectacularly explode or all internet is lost - they'd revert to paper charting and bust out their pre made downtime kits with workflow instructions.
All units also have 'red phones' using dedicated copper circuits incase cellular or the main digital PBXes fail.

@Em0nM4stodon in addition we have our own scientific cluster so data analysis would continue as usual, and the online platforms we publish are hosted in EU at @hetzner
On top of that I have my own offsite backup (diy server at my parents)
I haven't been relying on windows for decades (and more recently even game under Linux thanks to #SteamDeck)
@Em0nM4stodon even my private e-mail is hosted in country at @infomaniak_network
Even my phones are degoogled thanks to #SailfishOS
So, while the rest of the country is completely burning down, I would still be able to smugly feel superior while working in my lonely corner.

I wrote to my MP (UK) about this. I didn't get a sensible reply
- My former employer ran MS servers. They would grind to a halt
- Some UK hospitals were still using Windows XP - dead in the water
- Emergency services and banks - don't knowThe whole country would be screwed
You can also add the threat to close payment services like Visa, Mastercard and Paypal.

Goes beyond the national plan.Each organization needs to have a business continuity plan that includes all significant US- based services, devices, and platforms becoming suddenly unavailable or unreliable.
Every bank, hospital, and utility, for example needs to have a documented, tested, and practiced plan

@blotosmetek @barbra @Em0nM4stodon I have a mini-computer that was Windows 2000 when I got it. It has never seen the internet and (as long as I'm in charge of it) never will. My spouse updated it to XP a few years ago, I don't think it improved anything. I use it to play one very old Windows only computer game.

There are European initiatives to switch to open source Software and a lot of high level politicians are babbling about "digital independence" and at the same time renew Microsoft contracts. There's a lot in motion in that regard over here and some projects are very promising and did a lot in a very short timeframe (there were even the first "does this work in a crisis"-tests and they were successful), but it's quite difficult to unattach yourself from decades-long dependency. Personally I do Digital Independence Days, we already did local Linux install parties for seniors to get away from Windows.

@Em0nM4stodon I live in New Zealand. The simple answer is no, we are not at all prepared.
Our government has been touting new data centres that have been established here to give us data sovereignty. But guess who runs them? AWS and Microsoft, for two.
Having the hardware on our soil is just an illusion of data sovereignty in my opinion (but I am not a tech expert).@Em0nM4stodon As a further matter of interest, the banks here no longer accept or issue cheques (checks). So, we do not even have any form of manual fall-back system.

@Em0nM4stodon It's absolutely required when you're building a system out like this... The first site that went live had its first major event only about a month in - a fibre cut happened disabling all external network access to the hospital (including the backup!)
- it was resolved fairly quickly within a day but yeah - you absolutely need 'old school' backup solutions for stuff like this 🫠It's a matter of when, not if.

Is your country prepared?@Em0nM4stodon on the whole, I’d say no, they’re not ready. But I think that’s more to do with the belief in the current mind rot passing, or the very real possibility of those companies actually leaving the US if it doesn’t.
The US is a very small market when compared to the rest of the world, those orgs would sink by quarter end. Way over-invested in infrastructure overseas, and I’d imagine it would be seized by government very quickly due to importance as critical national infrastructure.
That doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be a digital cataclysm in the interim. There definitely would.
From my standpoint, I’ve been designing resilient systems for a long while, and that means controlling the software and infrastructure, which is deeply unpopular but the only way to avoid these outcomes.
