So not a draft itself, but the system that would be used if a draft were instated to know the pool of people to draft from. Today it’s a manual process to register initially and to tell them when you move, etc.

@QasimRashid I guess I'm a little slow. Requirements to register for military service aren't decided by the Pentagon or the Sec of Def or anyone else & no single person can dictate that any form of automatic registration can occur. Though fragile, this country still has a body of legislators who are tasked with making laws, even those that decide who must register for military service. Hegseth can make all the announcements he wants, but he doesn't make laws. Why would your post not say this?

It should also be noted that it's not legally binding and will 100% be challenged in court if it comes down to them trying to make it real without going through proper channels.

Current scope of who must register: https://www.sss.gov/register/who-needs-to-register/ My understanding is that it is a federal law to register and the site below claims that failure to do so is technically a felony, but the DoJ has suspended investigations and prosecutions around potential cases since 1986 https://hasbrouck.org/draft/advice/threatening-letters.html. There are some other implications still relevant, such as for people who want a federal job.
From something I read previously, it sounds like a large number of people in scope either never register at all or they do but then never update their address after moving. I suspect they want to automate it at least in part to stop people from avoiding it. (There are, of course, lawmakers claiming it will ‘save money’ and ‘be easier’.) As for immigrants in scope, given the current administration’s bullshit, I’d assume DHS would be thrilled to use registration avoidance as another excuse to deport people.
As for the legal mechanism for the automation, it was an item in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act bill signed into law last year. It looks like it was in a 2024 bill as well, but I guess it got removed from that one.

Anyone with a Canadian citizen as a parent is automatically a citizen, and can file the paperwork to prove they have a Canadian parent and get their Canadian passport.
Anyone who has a Canadian ancestor who has not renounced their Canadian citizenship can apply for Canadian citizenship as well.
Canada is the land of the free.

Several young people who would work hard to make this wounded planet a better place for everyone to live are being forced to join army and fight the battles of the grown up men who will be deing soon and due to their age.
I suggest that the government should not force anyone to join government work that is highly risking their lives but encourage and support them for the betterment of this planet. -

Which I didn't even know the latter still happened. I thought that was nixed not long after I graduates high school.
