@LeoBistmans @chu It was a few pounds more expensive to buy it locally. But in my opinion that's a price worth paying to keep local shops alive.

@chu @SnowyCA Cancel that Netflix, Disney+, Crave account permanently.

@EdwinG @chu @SnowyCA is there still "TV" broadcast in Canada? In Germany: not, iirc.

@deborahh @SnowyCA @chu If the LCD TV was made in the last 18 years, it should be able to receive the digital TV signals.

              😄

🤔 Is there some sort of "adapter" for older models?

Edwin mentioned in order to pull in the signal, the tv had to be 18 or younger, but now that I think about it, I guess even if there was an "adapter" of sorts the tv wouldn't work.

@SnowyCA @deborahh @chu The answer is yes, they do exist.

They are called “ATSC Converter boxes” or digital-to-analog converter boxes.

Almost every channel I know of ran an advert when did the analog (NTSC) to digital (ATSC) conversion in 2011, and mentioned them 😅

Here’s a sample of those adverts for your viewing enjoyment:
                      https://youtu.be/NoM4rxNT2RI?t=139

P.S.: I said 18 years because I’m sure those TV support digital signals, older LCDs might as well… I just don’t know.

We were using a digital antenna with an OTA PVR that connected to the TV via HDMI but that's in storage now, as we've gone all ROKU or computer sourced TV, but that setup should work with any TV with an HDMI input

                                    @deborahh @SnowyCA @chu They also exist 😄

I use SiliconDust HDHomeRun, which put the TV signal onto your home’s network (cost me $120 back in 2011 IIRC)

Other brands do exist, most using USB.

P.S.: I said 18 years because I’m sure those TV support digital signals, older LCDs might as well… I just don’t know.

@EdwinG @SnowyCA @chu huh. Looks like a "ATSC Converter box" costs about $20. And I wonder if I might have one already, in my stach of AV connectors …
                                      An experiment for another day!
                                      Thanks.

@SnowyCA @EdwinG @chu 🤔 if there *is* an adapter, maybe it can let you play broadcast tv on your computer?

I wonder if that's possible.... on no... nevermind. I nearly forgot, out here the only broadcast station they pull in runs old westerns😖
