@eclectech Just as an afterthought: in Friday Night Dinner the father always used "shit on it" and for sure that would work well as a colourful Image.

@LappenjammerDieZweite Hah, you're not wrong - have added that to my notes for when I run out of FFS (just gathering everyone's replies from yesterday and the list is Quite A Size 😆 )

@eclectech You just can't do small projects, can you? You have to improve everybody's fediverse experience with hats, sparkles, boops and colourful curses 😁

@LappenjammerDieZweite This one is definitely going to need some polling too. In some languages there seems to be a lot agreement, others have a wild (and very entertaining) variety.

@eclectech Talking of German, somethibg we could possibly agree on is "Fickscheisse" (or FCKSCHSS for short) as we love our compositive words 😁

Considering making this the first in a series. A multilingual collection of "for fuck's sake".

I could eventually make a poster of colourful global disgruntlement.

                @ccferrie @MiaMarkTwo @eclectech

'A dhiabhail' is great - I love the actual sound of that word. So soft for a hard curse. Am only now thinking of the similarity in Danish and Irish here. In Danish, invoking the devil is also a way of saying 'for fuck's sake'. 'For Satan' - the devil - a dhiabhail. 'For Satan' is a stronger curse in everyday Danish speech than just using 'fuck' in English (as people do too).

@CiaraNi @MiaMarkTwo For @eclectech's benefit "A diabhail" is pronounced something like "A Yeowl" in English phonetics (to rhyme with owl)

@eclectech @CiaraNi I think it's the case in Scandinavian languages that their proper swear words are all religion-based, rather than, erm, carnal/physical.

Quebecois french is much the same, it seems every way to swear is a sacred churchy object; some variation on ‘tabarnak’ would probably fit the project, but wait for actual replies for Quebec…

Hey Quebecers, what’s the closest expression to the UK’s “for fuck’s sake” in your neck of the woods?

OK, lets give this a shot. Basically with my linguistics skills I will be able to do ONE more. That would be quite a short series. To make it longer a fedi collaboration will be required 😁

If you fancy helping please let me know how to write "for fuck's sake" in your language (native, or one you're pretty fluent in - no literal translations from machines please).

Of course the big question is whether it's used elsewhere?

@UrbanEdm @DavidM_yeg @stephanie @eclectech @CiaraNi @MiaMarkTwo I’ve heard from one Québécois friend that which of those words is considered most spicy/taboo varies somewhat by age/generation. Not sure if that’s true? Would love to hear informed opinions.

Oh interesting! I know of “câlisse” but in my *limited* experience have never heard it in the wild. Would it be used by itself as an expression of disgust/dismay, or in a longer phrase?

@DavidM_yeg @stephanie @eclectech @CiaraNi @MiaMarkTwo that one's versatile! As an exclamation, it can carry a feeling much like FFS, when it's stretched out:
Cawwww' - lisssss' ! (May be accomanied by stomping a foot or hand).

And it can serve for emphasis as an adjective:
😠 Il y avait un câlise de [noun].

@CiaraNi @MiaMarkTwo For @eclectech's benefit "A diabhail" is pronounced something like "A Yeowl" in English phonetics (to rhyme with owl)

@ccferrie @MiaMarkTwo @eclectech Thanks. It's not the most phonetic of words right enough, even by Irish standards 🙂
