@NickSchwanck @rustyferris @imaginaryuncle just realized this year how bad my hearing is now. Same reason - concerts and playing in bands, mostly in the 90s but also beyond. Tinnitus is peculiar and a bit shitty.

Hi! I’m new here. I’ve tried Mastodon a couple times but maybe third time’s the charm! I have become increasingly disillusioned by mainstream social media and I’m searching for ways to connect with other people outside of an algorithm.
I teach high school English and I read a lot. Currently at book 92 of a read around the world project. I was a teen in the 90s and still trying to keep my grunge phase alive. I love art and film too.
Hope to meet some likeminded people!

@vollink what I find depressing about trying to talk about books online is how fewer and fewer people care about it with each passing year. Reading culture is dismal these days.

@alex hi! Thanks for the hashtag tip. I was feeling pretty burnt out so I set myself the challenge to read a book from every country. The rule is that the author has to be born there. I just look up books from the country I want to read from and choose what sounds good to me. I also read recommendations sent to me by others. I’m tracking it on Instagram so far. I can send a link if you’re interested to see what I’ve done!

@imaginaryuncle It certainly does. In my case, I committed to being more interactive and that made me feel more connected. It really is a pleasant environment to be in.

@plzupgrademe I have lots to say about Southern (US) Gothic! Flannery O’Connor is one of my favourite writers. But please educate me on what Southern Ontario Gothic is. I’d love to learn! As for Munro, I used to love her short stories but I’ve sadly let the controversy with her daughter colour my judgment of her work. It’s a triggering situation.
