Hi! I’m new here. I’ve tried Mastodon a couple times but maybe third time’s the charm! I have become increasingly disillusioned by mainstream social media and I’m searching for ways to connect with other people outside of an algorithm.
I teach high school English and I read a lot. Currently at book 92 of a read around the world project. I was a teen in the 90s and still trying to keep my grunge phase alive. I love art and film too.

@imaginaryuncle welcome. mastodon is great. You just need to make an effort at first. Everything you want in your timeline has to be found and followed by yourself. It's a real change form algorithms. Follow @FediTips maybe, if you want more tips how this functions . There's also a website

@imaginaryuncle hi Liz, welcome! My only advice is to follow a bunch of very random people and then scale back. There’s no algorithm so you have to do more work to find people, but also there’s no algorithm so you don’t have to endure rubbish from people you don’t follow
hashtags are also big here and it’s possible to follow a hashtag rather than a person. That’s a pretty good way to find people. -

@imaginaryuncle my two cents on how Mastodon became fun for me...
Once I started talking to strangers (i.e. being comfortable jumping into conversations with people I hadn't interacted with before), it started being super fun. People here have generally been super nice and interesting, and for the few who aren't, or who push my buttons one too many times, the controls for what I see are amazing.
So I guess what I'm saying is, talk to people, and if they suck, feel free to block a bitch.
