Hi!

Hi! I’m new here. I’ve tried Mastodon a couple times but maybe third time’s the charm! I have become increasingly disillusioned by mainstream social media and I’m searching for ways to connect with other people outside of an algorithm.
I teach high school English and I read a lot. Currently at book 92 of a read around the world project. I was a teen in the 90s and still trying to keep my grunge phase alive. I love art and film too.
Hope to meet some likeminded people!
@imaginaryuncle welcome back!

Welcome (back)! Excellent profile page art!
BTW, you didn't explicitly ask for advice, but since you mention trying before, and also that you're interested in breaking free of algorithms, I'll just give my "Step 0" Mastodon suggestion:
Go follow a bunch of hashtags. Like 30 or 40; 50 if you can.
Because there's no algorithms, but the servers have to know what to put in your timeline. There's lots of ways, but hashtags are an excellent start. Have fun!

@imaginaryuncle So much great advice here. For me, the killer Mastodon feature is filtering. Whenever something annoys me three times, I just create a filter: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/#filters

@imaginaryuncle My advice is to follow a lot in the beginning. Interesting people tend to boost other interesting people worth following and soon this will snowball and you will have curated an amazing feed of posts that speak to you personally.
Also follow hashtags a lot

hello fellow Grunger.
I went through both a grunge and a goth phase. I think there are lots of us here in that age range with I bet similar interests. Hope this time it works out.
