Watching this Apple event tout how iPhones will soon be able to record ambient audio/conversations and transcribe "high level notes" for you. It's billed as private and end-to-end encrypted, but I think the bigger harm is the normalization of always-listening devices. It's creepy and not normal.

@zackwhittaker Should not both sides agree to recording conversation?

@NMBA @zackwhittaker no idea how it applies in Canada, but I seem to remember reading that there’s a device (a TV, I think) that already does this and informs the owner that it’s their responsibility to tell anyone that could be recorded. Same old pass the buck bullshit will likely be used by Apple.

Yep, and the law doesn't matter unless you want to present evidence in court.

@zackwhittaker it’s also disappointing because it plays into existing conspiracy theories about “your phone is listening to you all the time”.

Who wants to design the phone box for anyone who enters my house to put their phone while they visit?

Seriously. I am so not tolerating this.

@zackwhittaker You’re not wrong. I think as a society we’re about to have to navigate a whole lot of invasive technology. Be it Meta’s pervert glasses or an always on bugging device in someone’s pocket.

I'm trying to have some hope that the anarchist tech wizards of the web will surface in this time of need to offer us jamming devices - adversarial noise attacks on voice assistant tech like alexa or siri is already a thing. I'd obviously rather these creepy pieces of ewaste never be built, but I guess if you can't beat em, brick em with command injections xD

@zackwhittaker I was just about to toot about the weirdness of this feature. It has a summary "that let's you go back in time for 15 seconds", but also, somehow, "Privacy is protected at every step. These audio intelligence features do not create or store audio recordings."

These back to back statements are at odds with each other unless there's some slimey technicality legalese that allow them to be true like 'we write a transcript which technically isn't an audio recording'

Watching this Apple event tout how iPhones will soon be able to record ambient audio/conversations and transcribe "high level notes" for you. It's billed as private and end-to-end encrypted, but I think the bigger harm is the normalization of always-listening devices. It's creepy and not normal.

@zackwhittaker The worst part is the "How Audio Intelligence features protect the privacy of those nearby" which is just "we don't record who said it, but you still get to read anything we captured them saying".

So in other words, it doesn't protect their privacy at all.

@zackwhittaker You’re not wrong. I think as a society we’re about to have to navigate a whole lot of invasive technology. Be it Meta’s pervert glasses or an always on bugging device in someone’s pocket.

I think it is time to add this kind of tech to the long list of illegal technologies: CFC, asbestos, DDT, human cloning, DMCA circumventing devices and software...

It is never 100% effective, but it always helps A LOT.
