To make a plea for slowing development, while being ideally placed to do exactly that, is to produce in us the notion that development cannot be stopped, that technological development is out of control. This is part of the 'Inevitablism' delusion big tech actively propagates.
Like arsonists petitioning for stronger protections against the 'phenomena' of arsony.
It is a patronising ploy, social engineering.
They mock us.

Amodei in a DM to Altman, as the first nukes take air and grids go dark:
'Well, we did tell them this would happen, that we needed to be stopped. But nobody did anything'

I've been donating to stopai, boycotting all ai, and became a Unitarian Universalist (if anything legal comes up).

I have a theory that maybe the AI frontier labs want to slow down because its actually impossible for them to go any faster. They might have hit a limit, either in the performance of the model or in their costs. And to save face, they can just say they are "intentionally" slowing down instead of admitting that they are getting diminishing returns on their investments.

@mishandlingboners @Digitaldakini Great to read. And yep, not using AI is #1. To reduce demand is quite literally disempower. These giants are nothing without an audience generating usage statistics that stimulate investment, not to mention license fees for the non-free tiers, and training data otherwise (as with OpenAI's 'free' offerings, but probably all of them in reality).

@JulianOliver That's been going on since the first transistor was made. Which has been growing in efficiency and decreasing in size and it's been doing that exponentially.

@JulianOliver Except for the risk they knew but didn't tell us. They sold it to the sheeple and expected those of us who are awake not to use our talents to defend our rights and freedoms and alert those who cannot comprehend the threat as well.

@JulianOliver We are a society who is distracted by constant chaos right now. Even presently I have a complicated relationship with politics. It's becoming less 3D and more 2D. I know that this is a less painful this way to deal with international politics of Team Drumpf
