Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you.

@klefstadmyr@vivaldi.net @FediTips@social.growyourown.services what if they just say 'nah' though
-
@Cappyjax @FediTips so you basically are questioning the ability of critical thinking of the majority of your people? If so, trying to solve the initial problem with a maybe technical approach, would be fighting the symptoms instead of the root cause. Because the problem is then, that people more or less solely decide based on trust. Why they do that must be researched like maybe lack of education, the design of social media, cultural background, etc.
-
@project1enigma @tauon @FediTips
This happened to me as well
@Energetic_Nova @tauon @FediTips
That's not good. Regrets.
-
Yup, if a server hosts a bigot and knows what they're up to but refuses to remove their account, the next step is to tell your own admin about this so they can consider defederating the rogue server.
@FediTips @Orb2069 @tauon @klefstadmyr
Nice theory. "Don't tell us how to do moderation."
-
@FediTips @e_t_wright @roknrol
This place is full of people who want me dead and I know it because they oppose democrats.
@Energetic_Nova @FediTips @e_t_wright @roknrol that's just horrible!
You are aware that there are many better moderated instances around? Mastodon.social has a pretty bad name, it's just too big to block for most servers. It's definitely worth looking around, if you're not doing that already.
-
Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you. They tell people you're doing horrible depraved crimes. Would you just block them?
What happens when other people don't block them? When other people believe the lies and share them?
What if this turns into real life abuse and violence against you and your family?
This is what vulnerable groups face from bigots. Bigoted accounts need to be shut down, servers which refuse to remove bigots should be defederated.
"Just block them" doesn't work.
@FediTips, the main thing is not to turn out to be a bigot yourself, a bigot who blocks people simply for dissent. And it is important to remember that the main threat to the free Internet and freedom in general is not misguided people, but monopolies and the politicians who serve them.

@mees @FediTips @e_t_wright @roknrol
They said I was insulting people when I told them I hated them… but they called me illiterate. Which was an intelligence based insult… I dont think telling people you hate them for ruining their life is “insulting”. I think that is something else entirely. Its an emotion which I expressed. Which is not an insult. Its a feeling….

@FediTips @e_t_wright
What if it’s on Nostr, but I can’t defederate from Nostr.@itzpingcat@sakurajima.moe why can't you defederate nostr? /Genq
We were able to block them by defederating all the bridges, and that's worked perfectly ever since. -

@FediTips Yeap.. Happened to me too. Not on Fediverse but still and doesn't change the fact that I got at first harassed and verbally molested online and later in the real life brutally attacked and beaten by same a-holes. And all because the people who were obliged to react (admins and moderators of an well known, "reputable" IT forum) did not do so and, through their ignorance, allowed the escalation. What's more, they even tried to sweep the case under the carpet and delete the evidences.

@alex
Bluesky as in the next oppressive and corrupt police state (because they apparently have centralized moderation).It wasnt a sincere suggestion but an explanation of why oppressing your fellow people does not work but the conditions need to change. As in bluesky is what happens when you try to solve an issue with more instead of less oppression.
As I said, fanon wrote about this. Alexandra Kollontai did too in "the social basis of the woman question"
@FediTipsThe usual dilemma. Instead of addressing the criticism of the Fediverse, which has been described very well here, some people prefer to write "Bluesky is stupid." The uncomfortable truth is that the accounts that were kicked off Bluesky for anti-Semitism have found a good home in the Fediverse and are still being courted here.

@zotheca
Yikes. Theres a lot to unpack here.First of all, nice strawman! You definitely know that your fake criticism does not adress anything that was written and only tries to trigger people.
Second, mixing antisemitism allegations in a discussion is no red flag AT ALL, right?
I suggest you walk along. I dont think we have anything constructive to discuss.

p.s. If anyone wants a specific real life example of this actually happening, here is one:
TL:DR -
A black grandfather played with his white grandchildren in the park, their family videoed it as it was a wholesome scene.
Far right racists stole the video and lied about its context, claiming it was actually an immigrant trying to abduct kids. The video and lies were shared to millions of people. The innocent grandfather is threatened in the street and lives in fear.

@FediTips Thank you for calling it out and making this recommendation

Racists post and "the video and lies were shared millions of times."
Meta and Musk make profits out oft racism. -
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services And also strangers mansplaining about how the Fediverse is decentralise when anyone brings up about being harassed on here.
I don't think they intend to be malicious doing it and think their being helpful but it a equivalent of reading a brochure and talking about stuff in there like it's groundbreaking to people that.. well, already have read it or know about it as it basic fact unless you're a newbie.
