    There's apparently scammers going round pretending to be Mastodon admins, demanding people "verify their identity".

    Do not click on their links, do not give them any info. It is a scam. Genuine Mastodon server admins never demand verification like this.

    Here's a guide to how to recognise and avoid various kinds of scams on Mastodon and the wider Fediverse:

    @FediTips
    The appearances I've seen of this scam are using the x.gd URL shortener.

    Aside from reporting the accounts on fedi, I've also been reporting the links (which are in violation of x.gd's ToS) here: x.gd/en/contact.

        Here's a SHORTER guide:

        NEVER give out your personal information to an unsolicited online link.

              p.s. The scammers are apparently messaging people about "suspicious activity" and "guideline violations" claiming that the victim's Mastodon account will be deleted if they don't verify their identity within 24 hours.

              This is a lie designed by the scammers to panic their victims into sending personal details without pausing to think.

              Genuine Mastodon admins never ever send messages like that.

              (Thanks again to @amministratore for the extra details!)

              @FediTips @amministratore doesn't change the fact that some Admins/Moderators engage in #blackmail, (as I've seen with jorts.horse) or blindly side with literal Neonazis (see c.im) or are otherwise powertrippin' (see infosec.exchange / infosec.space)…

                    @Giddy

                    Yup, it's not a new trick on here either.

                    It seems to reappear every time there is a news story about a government somewhere demanding ID verification, the scammers are counting on people thinking it is now a requirement.

                      @FediTips #Mastodon is important enough to get targeted with scams.

                      Yesterday I got a #Gaza scam I usually get sporadically on #Bluesky.

                      By triggering a notification (like, follow, etc.), they trick you into reading their profile where they lie about a good cause and want you to donate money.

                      @Stefan_S_from_H Not only a notification triggering, sadly. Most of mine "Gaza spam" is just an unwanted replies even without links to the absolutely irrelevant toots. E.g. I wrote smth about Emacs editor and then suddenly got a putting pressure on emotions reply about "poor children who die from starvation literally next hour so pls give us your money and CVC code"
