The European Parliament lets #ChatControl 1.0 go through despite a majority voting against it (314:276) – allowing mass scanning of private chats until 2028. Survivors are warning. My analysis and why this is the wrong approach

So true. I am very pro-EU. Except these shenanigans make me get underbelly feelings of "FUCK EU, let it all go to shite then" (to say it diplomatically). Well.. take a deep breath. On to fighting off #ChatControl 2.0.
But also: Who are these freaking lobbyists that keep pushing this shebang against the wishes of the people, at all cost? More naming and shaming, please.

If the Data Retention Directive (Directive 2006/24/EC) couldn't survive _Digital Rights Ireland and Others_ (C‑293/12 and C‑594/12), surely this is in many ways many times worse?

@smallcircles @echo_pbreyer Yea this sucks, the eu is often does wonderful things but it is also deeply flawed as seen here. The only fix for it is treaty reforms and unfortunately it is unlikely that member states will agree on such reforms any time soon...

El Parlamento Europeo deja pasar el #ChatControl 1.0 pese a que una mayoría votó en contra (314:276), permitiendo el escaneo masivo de chats privados hasta 2028. Las víctimas advierten de sus riesgos. Mi análisis Tolles EU-Parlament, das ja angeblich so demokratisch ist.
Aber in anderen Ländern hoch einen auf Moralisch machen.

@echo_pbreyer Tried my best by emailing and calling my MEPs. Of course most of them ignored me or they weren't in office.
It's frustrating.

@bjorn @echo_pbreyer An absolute majority of all MEPs incl. absentees was required to vote down the proposal, I think that was the point of the procedural tricks deployed this week?
@HaTetsu @bjorn @echo_pbreyer what I didnt get is: if theres no absolute NO-Majority, then there is also no absolute YES-Majority...

@andrewblasco @echo_pbreyer the problem is that the European Union is the biggest compromise ever envisioned. One of those compromises is seen here. The parliament needs to get an absolute majority to fight back against the decision of the member states(The Council of the European Union where national ministers vote). The only way to have this not happen again is treaty reforms which needs all the member states to agree on it...
