You don't need to use your real name on the Fediverse. It is totally fine to use a nickname or made up name, as long as you're not impersonating someone else.
You also don't need to use a photo if you don't want to. You can put a picture of something else on your profile, or don't have a picture at all. (Many blind users have no image on their profile, for example.)
The only info you need to give when you sign up is an email address, and only your server's admin sees this.

@FediTips In the Netherlands there has been serious political discussion if using your actual name on social media should be obligatory, because this would make them "safer". In the end the Secretary of State advised against it, because it would be hard to enforce and impractical for companies to gather and verify all this data…

That sounds incredibly dangerous to even consider
It would encourage identity theft, stalkers turning up at physical addresses, political suppression etc.
