How much money (USD) would it take for you to agree to watch a one-minute ad?

@evan Why wouldn't I chose the max option?

@atoponce I think "would it take" implies that you choose the minimum value that you'd accept.

It really depends on the ad. Some are well-made and fun to watch.
But to watch basically anything they want to shove in front of my eyeballs, stealing a minute of my finite lifetime..? That's going to cost.

@mpjgregoire let's say you do as good a job as you would otherwise do for paid work.

@TerryHancock yes, that is actually the premise of this poll.

@evan
The moment an ad shows up in youtube, I abandon the page. -

@evan Note that the value I place on the proposition that I be shown an ad voluntarily and get paid is not the same as what I might be willing to pay to stop being shown an ad without my consent and someone else gets paid for it.

@log that's very interesting! I had assumed that the two would at least be close. Which is larger, for you, and on what scale?

Interesting results! I was mostly thinking about the value of this time to the watcher. I think it might be interesting to compare what advertisers pay and what content creators spend to make ad-supported content. I also think about what I pay, or not, for ad blockers and ad-free content.

I realize that $5/minute nets out to $300/hour, a pretty great billing rate for anyone who's not an entertainment lawyer, but for a single minute I don't think I'd do the deal for less than $10. Illogical but such is the human mind. Thanks all!

@evan There's a great version of this in the mini-series The Lost Room, where there are a series of "Objects" with odd powers. One of them is a pencil which if you tap the eraser against a hard surface, a penny appears. I did a calculation based on how fast I could tape a pencil at a rate I could reasonably sustain and then checked the weight and metal composition for that year's penny's (it always produces an identical penny). The I checked the melt value.

@evan If you did it as a full time job, 8 hours a day every day for a year, you could make a few million bucks, but you'd probably go insane from tapping the pencil over and over again endlessly. The pencil is essentially a cursed object that gives the user modest wealth, but would drive you nuts trying to use it.

@evan An interesting way to reverse this is: how much are you willing to pay for the ad free version of streaming services per month, and how many ad minutes does that save you from watching - you end up with a value per ad minute.

@evan I figure that by blocking surveillance ads I should be spending an extra $17/mo on subscriptions to even things out https://blog.zgp.org/or-we-could-just-not/ (but that's a USA number, probably lower in countries with less total money spent on advertising)
