️@FlockOfCats I still remember when I bought my first optical mouse, I was like "Woah, this new technology, how good can it be anyway"

️@FlockOfCats Funny enough, I'm slightly too young to have had to clean them, but I did use them and opened one up once as a young child (as opposed to when I was older but still a child, as I used optical mice by then).

@zillion @FlockOfCats I am amused by this new proxy variable for age>=40.
@mekki @zillion @FlockOfCats also if you remember when optical mice were called "laser mouse" to differentiate them from mechanical mice (even though they never really had lasers, just a red LED); works just as well.

️@FlockOfCats This is obviously a joke - mice are flexible enough to clean their own balls.

Fingernail and flick!@cy @FlockOfCats That's the way I've always done it.

i think the attitude of those early UK companies still lives on in the Raspberry Pi initiative
@jamesrg @RachelThornSub @pussreboots @FlockOfCats and out of Acorn grew ARM

@FlockOfCats Ugh, and that stupid fiber-like formation of hairs and gunk that would form on the rollers was so hard to get off even with a q-tip... Actually, it was, more than anything else, the biggest culprit in reducing mouse accuracy. I never actually had to do any of the rest there, just get that off the rollers.
@nazokiyoubinbou @FlockOfCats ah yes, cleaning the rollers using the stalk from the lid of a BIC Biro

️@FlockOfCats it's ironic many have, to this day, not learned to clean their balls
-
@FlockOfCats
I have a whole bag full of old mouse balls. A place I used to work threw out a lot of old mice and I collected the balls, thinking they could be useful for something in the future.Heavy, smooth, rubber coated, with a uniform size. Some day I will figure out what to do

@jannem Well, you *could* make another marble machine with a unique sound?

Just hope it's not the rubber type that melts after a few years in a plastic bag? -

️@FlockOfCats Wait, I still do that... With my trackball, that is. And it is more lint removal than ball cleaning.

@zillion @FlockOfCats I am amused by this new proxy variable for age>=40.
@mekki @zillion @FlockOfCats I started using a mouse a Xerox on a 6085 terminal, and it was an Optical mouse. They "upgraded" me to a Windows 95 PC with roller ball mouse. Then later all mice went Optical.

Did you know?In Australia to open the lid for ball holder you had to turn it clockwise, opposite as depicted.
