it's interesting everyone seems to be assuming i'm talking about games but i'm actually talking about anything. blog posts with AI header images, youtube videos with AI images or thumbnails, books with AI covers, music with AI cover art, etc

    but yes also games

@eniko and podcasts. so many podcasts who had perfectly fine covers that replaced them with slop for no reason

@eniko No one cares. You can build your app with pigeons and cave men running on hamster wheels. No one cares.

because if you used AI for that they cannot know what else you used AI for and so they cannot know if they can trust the core of your content and its message

          hope that helps

The throwaway framing is the whole problem. From the outside there is no way to verify where the line is, so everything downstream gets discounted by default, including the parts that are genuinely hand made.

putting a little AI generated stuff in your work is like putting a little sewage in a drink: now the whole thing is sewage

@eniko For me it's more: "If you've heard all the ethical arguments against it but decide that they don't matter for $reasons, I will still try to avoid you and your work, even the stuff you claim is completely L*M-free."

The example I keep seeing is "character portrait for a private TTRPG campaign that nobody's making money from" and ... maybe just do an image search, find something from an artist, and credit them? That'd probably fall under "fair use" and also isn't plagiarism.

@eniko Exactly. A little AI is why I unsubscribed from like five channels in one day, the one guy helping make the channels used gen AI in a game he helped "create". Since he's the lead of those channels, I don't trust any of them anymore. Even channels hes only tangentially related to, unsubbed and unfollowed on all social media. Can't trust any of it

@eniko I've talked to some bloggers about this and said, "hey, if you have AI generated art as your header, I assume the text is AI generated too" and they've just kind of been like.... "but it's not".

"Okay, but do you see how your blog now looks identical to every other spam blog? Do you see how you've adopted their branding, and how the first thing I see screams 'this is AI'?"

"I guess I do yeah, but.. well rest assured it's not."

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place or even more charitably: if i go to a restaurant, and i find out that one of your meals is just cheap premade frozen crap, why would i have any reason to assume you've got anything more than a freezer and a microwave back there

@eniko As if the way they're going to market their blog is by individually going to everypony who sees a link and on a one by one basis going "it's not what it looks like!"

Which seems to me like a bad marketing strategy, but what do I know I'm just a fox.

@eniko I should have added, I'm not saying you're wrong per se, I'm just saying it unfortunately doesn't matter. The tides of necessity and convenience will *always *win.

And the uncomfortable truth is that we're ALL owned, we all have at least one foot in the system. If that poster doesn't realize that then he's a fucking fool. Attempts to escape our imperial system are just band aids, the system will always catch up and consume you again, and again, and again. There is only one answer to all of this shit, and it's the answer no one wants to hear because it requires real, direct, radical action that requires real skin in the game, and virtually none of us have the courage required.

@burly @eniko this idea gets pushed a lot, and on one paw, yes, political action is necessary, and on the other paw, no, AI sentiment is overwhelmingly negative across the entire political spectrum in the US at least and there's pretty strong evidence that AI in advertising decreases attachments to brands, and games made with AI get fewer downloads, and the aggregate data is pretty clear that people do actually care about this.

It's not as fatalistic as people say.

@burly @eniko I wish they cared *more*, but.. no, using AI will directly affect market results in a number of situations, and there's decent evidence that people/critters are in fact voting with their wallets on this when they know what's going on and when they feel empowered to.

Political action is necessary, but don't make the mistake of assuming the masses are totally 100% indifferent to artistic quality. They're not.

What if you used ai to research?
Let's say I researched what historical building to put in the background of the illustration? What if my search engine used ai for this research?
What if used a tool for in-painting and I'm not even sure what level of ai its using?
What if I used reference images that might or might not be ai?
                              ...

In the end it's about the image, the quality, the soul. I think ai fails at that.

@eniko Someone got upset with me earlier today because I asked them how I could trust an article that had an AI image in it. They said the article was good. I repeated my question and got blocked. This is the message they missed.

"why are people so upset that i used AI for a throwaway image that's just a tiny part of a much larger work"

because if you used AI for that they cannot know what else you used AI for and so they cannot know if they can trust the core of your content and its message

                                      hope that helps

@eniko "if this is what you're willing to admit to" etc

It shows at least that you devalue the human effort that goes into other creative efforts.

"I'm a writer. Generative AI could never do what I do. But banner art? That's perfect for generative AI."

"I'm a video essayist. I research, write, film, direct, and produce all my videos. I take pride in my artistry and technical skill. But I need some music to play in the background so I'll use generative AI."

it's interesting everyone seems to be assuming i'm talking about games but i'm actually talking about anything. blog posts with AI header images, youtube videos with AI images or thumbnails, books with AI covers, music with AI cover art, etc

                                          but yes also games

@eniko I once saw an AI-generated flyer for a punk event and found that utterly baffling. The irony.

(Perhaps I already said this exact thing in your replies before. In that case, I apologize for the repetition.)
