@lritter Then the same thing could be said for less littering of caps in general. No, it's not reasonable to just dismiss it as chance.

@ahltorp @lritter the fact that it is a localised phenomenon does seem to point at geographical causes (waste carried over from UK, Norway?). We know that sea currents can carry stuff an incredibly long way.

@ahltorp also, you might want to edit your earlier comment to read "some beaches" if, as you say, it's concentrated on the western beaches. Otherwise it is all too easy to share your comment out of context to make it seem like a universal phenomenon.

@remaster This is probably meant as a joke, but honestly what isn’t there to like?

It’s simple and effective and the burden of implementation was put on the drink manufacturers.

That doesn’t negate the success in European collaboration at the other end of the spectrum. Airbus outsells Boeing almost 2:1, Ariane launches the JWSS at such precision it *doubles* the telescope’s life span. Galileo is a top-notch (if not the best) GNSS.

So I’ll take your bottle caps

@bill88t @Elektrotier @remaster The total amount of plastic caps found has gone down in Sweden though (62% fewer per square meter in 2025 compared to 2023).

The reason the west beaches of Sweden (Skagerrak, Kattegat and the Sound) are so littered with plastic caps is not fully known according to the report by "Håll Sverige Rent" (Keep Sweden Clean). They know that some people are very bothered with the caps, and that this might mean that they tear the caps off and throw them away.

@ahltorp the attached caps came into use in the spring and summer, and that has to be taken into account, of course. Were the bottle caps found on these beaches the attached sort, i.e. was it obvious that they had been torn off?

It did shape bottle design even outside the EU and reduces plastic pollution and the swallowing of bottle caps by animals. So it kind of is peak European invention by regulating the industry. 🤔

@remaster @gruber Anecdotal, but I didn’t spot a single bottle cap lying in the sand at the beach this summer, used to be a common sight. One report states 47% fewer caps found on beaches in the Netherlands.
                                Seems worth it?

It does reduce the amount of plastic trash in the sea and the swallowing of bottle caps by animals. So, this slight inconvenience saves animal lives.

@remaster What’s the problem with plastic bottle caps? Reasonable improvement. I don’t really get the logic behind alm the jokes. I mean, it’s understandable when some MAGA idiots do it, but this is the first time I saw it on Mastodon feed.

@oleksify From what I’ve heard, the regulation actually is working and helping the environment.
But it has a reputation of being annoying, literally ”in your eye”, although that depends on the manufacturers design.
Not perhaps the thing you brag with, so that’s a little funny.
