Welcome. Here's the rules:
1. You can easily block people, just view their profile and click the hamburger menu on the right – use it freely and often
2. Following people is easy too, as is unfollowing them – do it freely and often
3. Most people start on mastodon.social, but you'll probably have a better time if you find a smaller instance full of people you like and switch to it
4. You must add alt-text to images
5. Actually, I'm lying – there are no rules

If you haven't posted a self-introduction and/or a bio, you should. And you definitely want to use hashtags; they are the secret sauce of Mastodon success!

I think some peeps have already shared @FediTips with you - a lovely human with super resources and info.
As general guidance, follow early and often - without an algorithm, the timeline can be a bit quiet if you don't. (You can prune your follows over time.)
Also liberally use, explore, and follow hashtags, for the same reason.
