Lately I have been trying to tell manplainers and sea lions what they're doing before blocking them, to give them a shot at apologizing.

Lately I have been trying to tell manplainers and sea lions what they're doing before blocking them, to give them a shot at apologizing. But it almost always results in angry dudes saying obnoxious things, not apologizing, and that doesn't make anyone feel better.
This is just a reminder to myself to block more people.
@sundogplanets
I would try to explain what I'd said, just to get an argument back. I now just block. Life is too short for such "agita". -
@fathermcgruder @sundogplanets
Kinda, I want something like "mute+". Literally blocking beyond that post so they don't poison future threads.

just looked it up and found this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealioning
@sam Thanks! Everyday is a school day.

@sundogplanets Familiar with mansplaining but ... Sea Lion? Not heard of that one ... clarify?

@knud The offender can always get a new account and other thread participants can decide for themselves if they want to mute. Besides, everything we post is public anyway. Block button overrated.
@sundogplanets -
@capnthommo It's a form of trolling that involves endless bad-faith questions.
Wikipedia has fuller explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealioning
@Paul @sundogplanets oh yes. I had come across it before but I'd forgotten.thanks

@sundogplanets Familiar with mansplaining but ... Sea Lion? Not heard of that one ... clarify?
@Moving_Pictures @sundogplanets Demanding that she clarify is the first step on the slippery slope to sea lioning. If you google it, you'll find out.
-
@sundogplanets I don't understand this post, what are these mapliners and sealions doing and what are they?
@bur_d @sundogplanets Google exists.

@bur_d @sundogplanets Google exists.
@Bumblefish @sundogplanets wasn't aware

@sundogplanets If there's a grey zone, 'Thanks for your effort!' will clear it up instantly.

@bur_d @sundogplanets Now y'are. You can also scroll down this thread where several people have helpfully explained.
-
@sundogplanets sea lions?

@sam @AndrewGambrill Much obliged, thank you.

@Bumblefish @sundogplanets would this then be considered mansplaining?

@sundogplanets@knud That said there should definitely be an optional reason field that you can fill out whenever you block someone. Also a duration setting. #FeatureRequest #ActivityPub

@bur_d @sundogplanets Thanks for your question! A rep will be with you shortly!

@sam Thanks! Everyday is a school day.
@AndrewGambrill @sam I didn't know this either. That said I was enjoying the idea that for she was blocking anyone who posted pictures of them balancing a ball on their nose

I learned a new term so that's good though.

@sundogplanets @cstross please don’t take this as sealioning (it _could_ be something a sealion would ask, but believe me, this is not my intention)
Where is the limit of ‘honest asking’ or ‘honest trying to explain’ to ‘sealioning’ or ‘mainaplaining’!
@jguillaumes @sundogplanets @cstross
I was wondering the same. Specially that in the internet many times there are misunderstandings. We read sentences without having other cues (tone of voice, face expressions), so we can misunderstand a sentence. Specially that we are all from different backgrounds (different native languages, etc).
Sometimes I read a sentence, reply, and 20 minutes later I realize I misunderstood
(and come back to correct or apologize, whatever is needed ).
