Lately I have been trying to tell manplainers and sea lions what they're doing before blocking them, to give them a shot at apologizing.

@sundogplanets I don't understand this post, what are these mapliners and sealions doing and what are they?
@bur_d @sundogplanets Google exists.

Lately I have been trying to tell manplainers and sea lions what they're doing before blocking them, to give them a shot at apologizing. But it almost always results in angry dudes saying obnoxious things, not apologizing, and that doesn't make anyone feel better.
This is just a reminder to myself to block more people.
@sundogplanets If there's a grey zone, 'Thanks for your effort!' will clear it up instantly.

@bur_d @sundogplanets Now y'are. You can also scroll down this thread where several people have helpfully explained.
-
@sundogplanets sea lions?
-
just looked it up and found this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealioning
@sam @AndrewGambrill Much obliged, thank you.

@Bumblefish @sundogplanets would this then be considered mansplaining?
-
@knud The offender can always get a new account and other thread participants can decide for themselves if they want to mute. Besides, everything we post is public anyway. Block button overrated.
@sundogplanets@knud That said there should definitely be an optional reason field that you can fill out whenever you block someone. Also a duration setting. #FeatureRequest #ActivityPub

@bur_d @sundogplanets Thanks for your question! A rep will be with you shortly!

@sam Thanks! Everyday is a school day.
@AndrewGambrill @sam I didn't know this either. That said I was enjoying the idea that for she was blocking anyone who posted pictures of them balancing a ball on their nose

I learned a new term so that's good though.

@sundogplanets @cstross please don’t take this as sealioning (it _could_ be something a sealion would ask, but believe me, this is not my intention)
Where is the limit of ‘honest asking’ or ‘honest trying to explain’ to ‘sealioning’ or ‘mainaplaining’!
@jguillaumes @sundogplanets @cstross
I was wondering the same. Specially that in the internet many times there are misunderstandings. We read sentences without having other cues (tone of voice, face expressions), so we can misunderstand a sentence. Specially that we are all from different backgrounds (different native languages, etc).
Sometimes I read a sentence, reply, and 20 minutes later I realize I misunderstood
(and come back to correct or apologize, whatever is needed ). -

Why not just ignore them? If you block them they won't have a chance to learn anything anymore.
You explain once and if they don't like it or accept it then just ignore them. You don't need to explain twice.

@jeffzugale @sundogplanets This is a lovely equivalent to the ancient pronouncement of *plonk*.

@sundogplanets@fathermcgruder @knud @sundogplanets Yeet button as yet undeveloped

@sundogplanets I have nothing helpful to suggest (and even if I did I have just enough wit to know this would not be the time), but I hope you end up with whatever approach works best for your mental wellbeing, and I'd like to apologise for the behaviour of many member of my more-snowflaky gender

One of the few things from Dune Messiah that stuck with me before I gave up on it was the Bene Tleilaxu notion of warning your enemy of the trap you have set for them as an honourable thing to do.
I've found myself falling into a similar pattern in Internet fight.
All of which is to say, you could reframe your practice as being the honourable thing.
