@fj around here only preppers, nazis and hill-billies are driving pickup trucks. And of course farmers
-
@tkissing I expect polite answers because I think respect is something everyone should be granted, regardless if we agree or not. It is very easy to not insult people just because.
I don’t own such a truck and I don’t even want to. I’ve never hurt anyone in any way or form. So I don’t know why you are being this aggressive. But you do you.
@reloadedhead unfortunately the attitude of presuming the worst and attacking people in unacceptable manner on that presumption is common around here.
We need to find collective ways to calm those people down as they poison the Commons with their insensitivity. Moderators are apparently not up to the task.

@fj because they are huge heavy gas guzzling tanks and peeps are buying EVs as they cost less to run. 'MURICA! are going backwards in the car market and wondering why they are not selling.

@fj I really wish we could have an area tax: bigger vehicles take up more room and increase traffic.
-
@fj I strongly feel that vehicles should be taxed by unladen weight. The damage to roads -- which has to be met out of the public purse -- scales with the fourth power of the axle loading, and the tax should scale similarly.
It would be tricky to frame legislation which outlawed very large and heavy private vehicles which would not also outlaw fire engines, for example; but it wouldn't hurt to tax them into oblivion.
@simon_brooke @fj
That is exactly the road tax in the Netherlands. Well, not exactly... It's weight and fuel type.
A light electric car is cheapest in taxes -

@openrisk internet in general has always been. I do understand the “presuming the worst” attitude. I am very reserved when it comes to trust. But respect on the other hand is very easy to grant!
-
@killionaire @fj yep stupid government tied emissions requirements to foot print size and shits been getting bigger ever since.
@Rin3d @killionaire @fj and the people who drive them really should not be. Because they think these are automobiles for a small city streets. They are showpieces now as the truck beds are so small you can’t haul anything other than your trip to Costco. Good luck putting furniture in the back of one
-
@fj why not let people decide if they want such a large vehicle or not?
@reloadedhead @fj https://goingdark.social/@cyberwitch/116369172598482083
You know, there are many truck drivers that get struck into narrow roads just because they followed G maps, that's another reason
If you are a danger for people you have no right to do as you wish for no reasonable necessity -

The EU should offer a compromise: allow the Tesla cybertruck to be sold.
(Because absolutely no one will by it but the Trump regime are too stupid to figure that out. They'll take the "win" back to the boss with pride.)

@reloadedhead Demanding respect is easy. Showing it is not, otherwise you'd have at least phrased your question differently. Or you would have thought about the topic for about half a second and realized that the size and a weight of a car effects other people at least as much as the person driving it.
As for politeness in language, I couldn't care less. US (debate) culture, including in the House and Senate, is all about polite words and a calm voice, but look at what that country is doing. -

@fj oh, I've traveled in extensively in Europe, and can confirm: full size US pickups have no business on the roads of Europe. It's not Europe's fault US manufacturers have enlarged their pickups so much they literally don't fit on European roads anymore. (In truth, they *barely* fit on US roads either.)
-
@fj they're so dangerous. Part of this arms-race of "protecting ourselves on the road to the risk of everyone else." Their high center of gravity and sense of overconfidence is terrible for snowy conditions, and their enormous hoods make blindspots where even people in my neighborhood got killed by one of these things talking a turn and not seeing pedestrians.
@fj AND ALSO they don't really have more power or torque, at least not the amount that people need for legally sized and weighted trailers. They're glorified minivans cosplaying as giant penises
-
@fj I've been looking at cars recently, and I've decided to not get a Kia EV9 because it's too large to fit in normal parking spaces. The EV9 is 5 m, and this abomination is 6.35 m?! That's just bizzare.
@mikaeleiman 6,35? That's just one cm shorter than my complete Fiat Ducato based campervan

@fj They call the F-150 one of the biggest pickup trucks?! Guess they haven't seen the F-650.

@simon_brooke @CelloMomOnCars @fj I’m afraid such tax would also disincentivise EVs, as even the small ones would weigh considerably more than similar size internal combustion engine models. All the externalities should be accounted for.
@ghard @simon_brooke @CelloMomOnCars @fj EVs are somewhat heavier but not by much. our car has 78 kWh (nominal) NMC battery capacity and that’s like 360 kg. The electric drivetrain is lighter weight than an ICE would be with gearbox and clutch and cooling and all the other stuff. Tank and fuel also weighs some, so I’d expect a 100-200 kg mass penalty for being BEV instead of petrol (can’t compare this model directly, no ICE option)

@reloadedhead yes, its not about trust or any sort of agreement but basic civility (that we normally grant each other in real life). Verbally attacking complete strangers is not something we should normalize.
In adtech media people blame the platforms for profiting from polarization etc. but clearly there is more than that at play. Mastodon is supposed to do better, because open and non-profit etc. but it isn't. Everyday I witness such episodes around here... Does not bode well.

@fj That second image would be a lot more illustrative if they had aligned the top rear corner of the cabins.

@fj go further, add regulations to give tax advantage and free parking to cars of smaller dimensions and lower fuel use.
basically introduce a European "city car" equivalent to the Japanese kei car.
