“Programming is hard,” Epic says in a blog post. “So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher”

@GossiTheDog I've been using the Heroic Launcher for a while now to access games from Epic since I game from a Linux system. To my knowledge they don't use AI in their code pipelines at all, and the launcher is completely open source. So for folks who maybe gave Epic their money once upon a time and want to continue to play said game without an AI monstrosity as a gateway, I can say that my experience with Heroic has been pretty excellent.

@da_667 @GossiTheDog I take shits faster than Steam boots, but I wouldn't ship my shit to people.
@NosirrahSec @da_667 @GossiTheDog now come on, I think we all would ship our shit to *some* people.

@GossiTheDog is it functional? Who cares? We finally beat Valve at something that matters not fucking at all
@da_667 @GossiTheDog meanwhile gaben is like "im taking up throat singing"

@da_667 @GossiTheDog And PSA you can still add their free games when a good one comes up to your account via their web site...just so you know

If programming is that hard for you guys, maybe hire people who know how to do it?
-
The new vibe coded Epic project is great
10/10 slop
@GossiTheDog this is the company that needed a petition to get them to make fixes on Unreal and then made a pretty basic UT that suddenly got better once Q3’s demo was released and some ideas could be copied.
Imo if he didn’t push his engine on everyone the company wouldn’t exist. That’s why he wants to be able to push his crap store on everyone. Lock in is their only means of survival.

@maxsec2022 @GossiTheDog I do 100% organic, artisanal, white-glove, IT and Infrastructure work. Zero vibes. All organic.
@NosirrahSec @maxsec2022 @GossiTheDog You forgot "boutique" and "bespoke".

quality code right there -
How the actual fuck is shit this bad being shipped???
Corporate has completely lost the plot
@nullagent @GossiTheDog it happens the same way a lot of junk comes out of Google and Microsoft. From the outside they look like big monoliths, but on the inside you have a bunch of teams all desperately scrambling for recognition (see also "crabs in a bucket"). There’s a good chance that those teams are incentivized or measured on how fast and publicly they do things not on how well they do things.
I can understand it even though I’m not in that world. If I’m a low to mid-level "contributor" in one of those companies and I’ve been there for a few years, the company performance has absolutely nothing to do with what I get paid - and these days any individual contribution that I may have been responsible for is going to be overshadowed by some executive's vibecoding because they want to put their stamp on it.
Maybe I get a bonus at the department level if we ship. I can even use that as a talking point when I’m interviewing, because if I’ve been there for more than three years, I may be looking at jumping ship to another company. And if the product is crap, I can use that as part of my interviewing as well because obviously I left because the company insists on releasing vibe coded slop, and I’d like to go someplace where I can actually contribute.
But perhaps I’m overly cynical.

@nullagent @GossiTheDog by the way, have you heard about Microsoft's amazing new product, Copilot Shimmer?

@GossiTheDog What was wrong with the old launcher? It still seems good to me.
The old launcher is really bad, it lags a LOT and for most gamers, having Fab and UE library and the store combined felt like bloat. Funnily for me, it is the games and library sections that lag and freeze. It is embarassing how terrible their launchers are.
I haven't seen the new slop launcher, but the old one is hated by almost everyone. I might just move to Heroic rather than use new slop
-
@GossiTheDog Great! More reasons not to give Epic my money.
@philpem @GossiTheDog We are not Luddites for wanting humans to create our diversions.

@GossiTheDog I love that they're going on about how much faster it is than Steam when the loading speed was never the reason people weren't buying stuff from their shitty service.
Steam could take five minutes to load and Epic could load in five seconds and I'm still not buying from Epic.

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social I get that from time to time, because I've overloaded my system, and I think it's because X11 just can't keep up. But I'm not sure I can tell what you're using for your system (I've not enbiggened yet).

@GossiTheDog oh my god, it hurts from laughing so hard.
if a company is going to slop it up and brag about it, at least make ii presentable. lmao fuck.
