Mom telling me about a friend of a friend who got a million views on art he posted on deviant art.

I'm so fucking tired man
It's fine. I just support myself and my partner by making stuff. With skills. That took decades to develop. And it makes people happy. And it's hard work that takes years. That's basically the same as someone telling some AI "abstract flower leaves beautiful gradient trending on art station you are a world class artist", right?

@eniko Spite has become my primary motivator

@eniko You know that this is as old as the first cave paintings, nay, the first finger drawings in the mud? Artists and artisans have been ranting about this at least as long as the oldest sources we have indicate. Possibly the second work of art ever created was expressing this sentiment about a poor copy of the first work of art.

@eniko how many of the "views" were by AI scrapers?
-
@eniko Have you given drilling directly down through the centre of their spinal column to drain their life force a try?
@MachineLordZero @eniko i imagine doing that and immediately being bedridden for a week -
@MachineLordZero it's my mom so no, I haven't
@eniko @MachineLordZero i assumed the friend of friend was intended >.> -

@eniko She now, after some years of explaining, understands ... but reminded me in the past where mom was showing me stuff like "Flappy Bird" ( she read on the news about ) and going "Look this guy made millions with that game, why don't you do the same ?" .. Generative AI is odd .. much more ... because some people think that "AI made is good / nice" they think 'is good because I told it what to do' .. it's like when rich people considered 'manual labor' vulgar/uninteresting/worthless ..

If you want to make AI text or images or code I guess you do you (although you're buying into a fascist pillaging of the commons and environmental destruction, so uhh, don't do you actually) but it doesn't make you an author, artist, or even programmer and it never fucking will
-
@eniko People are so out of touch that I'm afraid we will soon need to fork the planet.

@deshipu not really, because a human being still had to make it

What even is the point of doing anything anymore dude. Just get your best bud Claude to do everything from now on. Who gives a fuck

@eniko "Wow! you're such a gatekeeper, you're not the only one with the right to do art you know? Why don't you get help with your narcissism?"
Actual comment I got from a random guy who traces AI images.
I feel you so much.

@eniko I was trying to reason .. in an abstract sense .. suppose you'd have a power, that allows you to turn into 'any form you want' an idea you express in words. Would you be 'an artist' at this point ? I think the main difference between that and AI is that 'you leave most of the job to transform the idea into reality to a machine', a machine that is hungry for power, space and resources to feed it that ultimately are the works of others done by years of practicing and thinking. But I CONT.

@eniko I genuinely don't know how to get over this precise feeling.

Yeah it won't be good and it won't mean anything at all but it's *something* and it costs you nothing so why not slop out some more content for the dead internet, go wild, the social contract is fucking dead anyway
Jesus fucking christ

Maybe this is it. Maybe this is the great filter. The wholesale fully automated computerized slaughter of meaning

@eniko honestly, this feels in the same vein as watching some people I know ask chatGPT for health advice, or asking it what direction to go to get back to their car when they have lost their place on a hiking trail, or asking it to find them a quiet restaurant (and it put them by a highway). Yes these all happened.

Mom telling me about a friend of a friend who got a million views on art he posted on deviant art. Click the link, "created with AI tools"

Why are you telling your daughter who has made actual award winning art about this person who made a computer make a picture that a million people without taste looked at?

@eniko It's definitely the one thing AI is very very good at: making it real clear who is a twat and who is not

@eniko CONT. the main thing is that it's not YOU doing the process of using knowledge and skills to transform an idea into reality, most of it is done by a machine that 'is not doing a mere machine task' it's replacing a personal/transformative process that a human should take and doing it 'with an algo' that 'doesn't really know what is doing' because AI has no consciousness. I think the problem in this case is you are "delegating too much of your task to a machine". And what if it malfunction
