never in a million years did i dream that my PhD studies in Iberoamerican colonialism and Latin American arts and culture would prepare me for this moment. yet, i did go into Latin American Studies because i wanted to study how exactly did 13 backwater English colonies became an empire.

    and 1898 is the key.

you cannot understand USA without understanding it’s relationship NOT to the UK but #SPAIN

#MAGA is a subset of the gringolarchy that has always been OBSESSED with 1492 Castilla y León…

@blogdiva Sadly, the American 13 colonies set out to be an empire even before they united against the British. Anyone not white was the target. They began with Native Americans, tried against Canada during the American Revolution but lost, went after Spain because Spanish Florida was so nearby. What became California and Texas were also Spanish, compounded by gold and beef ranching.

Very sad for a nation that talks so about how wonderful and free it is!

if we look at Spain’s waves of expulsiones (aka deportations) and their use of eminent domain to take over the lands and properties of the deported, it’s clear they had expanded the definition of LIMPIA DE SANGRE and “one-drop rule” not for pedestrian racist reasons but because it was a quick way to make money.

so even though LA LIMPIA didn't have in #Spain the same white supremacist connotations that #blanqueamiento had in #Argentina and #OneDropRule in the United States 🧵…

@blogdiva That's why England's Henry VIII abolished monasteries and abbeys in 1536: he needed the money.

England's Edward I expelled Jews in 1290 for the same reason.

Neither king was known for his financial management acumen. I think both were also well known for their love of war.

@blogdiva hummm, not exactly. In the Middle Age, península were divided in diferent kingdoms with many diferent languages and cultures in the territory. Expulsions a represions againts local aristocracy were a way to standarized the population in order made easier to rule in unified crown of Castillia and Aragon by the end of XV century. This made the basis of the spanish national cristianism during the Franco dictatorship.

@paeiro @blogdiva Hello. In the first toot, Liza refers to her PhD studies in this area. Unless you are a professor in this area, that means don’t question, go and find the sources yourself if you feel doubtful about what she’s written. Thank you.
